Lucas Paqueta investigated by FA for alleged betting breaches

If you look in the right dark places on the internet theres some serious shit kicking off about this affair and its deeper than one sacrificial lamb given up to protect a bigger issue at West Ham.
Interesting. Is there a suspicion that the betting-related match issues at that club go much wider than just one player then?

Had a thought about his betting as it appears it was just a one off and not like toney.

Maybe he told people back home that he was joining city. They all lumped on it at the bookies. City pulled out due to the price tag West ham were demanding. They lost the money they bet. Paqueta the gave them a little tip to win the money back.

Probably doing 2+2=5 but it makes sense in my head.

As the match in question was March prior to any serious suggestion he was joining us then I’d say not.

The rumour was that maximum bets were being placed by new accounts on not just his yellow card but other yellow cards ar unrelated clubs around Europe. IE someone connected to multiple players putting very weirdly specific £1000s bets on second half yellow cards.

Personally, I think Foden can do the defensive side fine. Didn’t Pep say last season that he could play left back if needed?
That central role is where I’ve always felt Foden will end up but he’s just had to bide his time while De Bruyne is still here and fit to play.
My greatest concern about Foden playing further back, especially in the middle, would be the inevitable increase in physical contact and the greater likelihood of injury, particularly to his knees. He’s done well to avoid serious injury to date. For me, he is still rather coltish and while he could ultimately play deeper, currently, his gifts are needed higher up the park, so we should be looking for someone else that can come in and compliment what we have.

Just remember that the FA is still just investigating. We don’t know anything about the charges yet or even possible penalties. It would take a while to know what happens if he is charged and he is presumed innocent till proven otherwise.

It’s obvious that he must have been involved.

How much proof they have will determine his ban/prison sentence.

Going to disagree here - to me, it's not at all obvious.

Each report is worded differently. You look at them together, how is he not involved. But that's chinese whispers for you.

The first question I’d be asking is why these bets were put on in his neighbourhood in Brazil. That’s far too much of a coincidence for him not to be involved.

Well, IP addresses and locations hold little to no weight. And identity theft is incredibly common on the web.

Hence, in the three other cases cited, Sturridge, Trippier and Toney, other evidence was provided - in the first two cases, text messages where the information was passed on. In the second, it was possible to conclusively prove Toney was the one making bets.

I mean, how many bets are made in that island every weekend? 4000 people in Brazil? A football mad nation, where the neighbourhood will have it's share of compulsive gamblers, for sure.

A football mad nation betting on yellow cards in a game thousands of miles away for a player from where they live?

I mean, it could be a coincidence, but it’s quite a stretch.

It’s far more serious than Toney and the others. It’s spot fixing and could end up with him doing time.

"EPL" is a phenomenon globally. Matches can draw viewing figures north of 100m.

It's easy to conflate the seriousness of the event with the level of proof. The former is not in doubt. But unless the evidence is sound and answers the reasonable doubts, there's no punishment, possibly not even a charge.

Found this from earlier in the year;

Two investigations regarding yellow cards in Arsenal matches, one in the EPL regarding an Arsenal player. Remember any charges? I can't find anything.

No. Were the bets put on in the players’ hometowns thousands of miles away?

We’ll find out one way or the other in due course.

It‘s circumstantial evidence so far.

The standard of proof for criminal prosecution is one thing and the standard for us buying him is much much lower.

No way we take the risk of reputational damage by being associated with Paqueta, much less AFTER this story has broken.

We are out and done with Lucas Paqueta.
