Lucy Letby infant murders trial - Guilty verdict (P 13)

Can someone who does something like this be regarded as sane?

Presumably so, as she's in jail, not Broadmoor. In the old days, we would have blamed the Devil for taking charge of her.

I find it very hard to get my head around a sane person doing something like this.

You can understand why people’s thoughts are just focused on revenge but I find it fascinating from an amateur psychological angle, cases like this.

I don’t like using words like “evil” because it suggests a religious aspect. But it’s a convenient word to use to describe someone who was just born not quite right. But it doesn’t tell you much about how and why extreme cases like this come to be.

There’s a standard common theme of classic behaviour in a lot of these types. Troubled upbringing, often abused, lack of social skills, start off torturing animals. Etc. etc.

This case is almost unique in my knowledge though. Female serial killers are virtually always heavily under the influence of dominant men. That’s not making excuses for them. It’s just a fact.

Whereas this woman appears to have acted entirely alone. I’ve not really studied her background but the little I have read doesn’t seem to give any indications of things to come.

Tragic without a doubt. But also fascinating.

Sanity is a legal concept.

She knew what she was doing was wrong because she made deliberate steps to conceal her crimes and give herself alibis (e.g. falsifying other patients notes) and she lied under questioning (making claims that aren't medically possible).

She likely has a personality disorder but not a diagnosable and treatable mental illness.

Admittedly I didn't catch all the news headline on radio. But the jury have struggled to agree early on in this case.

Coincidentally I'm currently reading a true crime book that includes an up to date chapter on Letby.
The author also dismisses mental illness, going on to say that she is simply a psychopathic individual. The planning, as you say, is the key. Her persona of "nice Lucy" was a camouflage to manipulate those closest to her.

But not until the decision on whether she can appeal her convictions has been made.

Nurse beverley allett killed babies a long time ago, forget when exactly

From a passive observers point, of view, it'd be best if she's found not guilty i think. If it was my child and i've got the choice to believe 'my kid was murdered by a psycho nurse' or 'my kid died naturally' I think I'd prefer naturally, and I'm not sure why, as both are too horrible to contemplate.
It's ridiculous though, when these serial killers get a retrial for one victim, when they've been already been convicted of 7 murders, as if they have any intregrity left?, and as if, in Letby's case it's gonna be a mitigating factor or something.. like how about the babies she could've killed but didnt. Close the book, lock the door and throw away the key

Was expecting it to be before my time, as I’ve no recollection. But turns out it was early 90s. Sure it must have been huge national news at the time but forgotten all about it.

Interesting that she “only” got a 30 year rec. for four murders and five attempt murders. If that was today it would be a whole life order without question, despite most people seemingly convinced that sentences are getting more lenient.

She’s actually served her minimum tariff and is eligible for parole. Although I highly doubt she’s going anywhere that doesn’t involve her been transported in a box.
