even when we put kids on the bench the first team has an uncanny knack of underperforming, making the game really close and difficult and therefore difficult for Pep to bring kids on.

They've had Wolves, Feyenoord and Southampton and each time the star players have played badly and made it a tight game, kids will get no chance under Pep in that situation.

well yeah, it was almost pointless for Diaz, and it was because Pep wanted to win the game and the first team were making a hash of it. If we'd go 3-0 up b the hour they'd have both got much more valuable time.

Honestly, in situations like Feyenoord, the world wouldn't end if say Foden or Diaz started. One player is not going to destroy the team and in hindsight; the young players wouldn't have done worse than some players anyway.

Obviously, playing 4/5 youth players in a standard situation (i.e. not Donetsk) is ludicrous, but one player here and there wouldn't hurt. If we are waiting for this 'perfect' opportunity to play youth players, say when we're 3-0 by the hour like you suggested, we'll be waiting for a long time and there won't be many opportunities for younger players.

More importantly, you learn 10x as much about a youth player if they're the only youth player in the side. You see how they fit in the first team at it's highest level.

In the EFL cup, by the time there's 3 or 4 youth players starting with the reserves it's a largely pointless exercise in judging how they fit in.

Exactly. If they fit in, it becomes clear that 'x' player can hack it at the highest level. It is the sort of opportunity someone like Foden needs, although there is no doubting his quality, it is crucial to see as to whether he can make the 'step up' per se.
