Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

I think it’s very concerning that you can line up with 5 at the back, 4 in front (deny space) and have a fast centre forward to hit a diagonal pass too...(We’ve been caught out by that pass over the top for the first goal so many times this season) and we don’t seem to solve playing against this setup. I saw very little in Lyons performance tonight that was any different to the Wolves performances earlier this season when I knew the writing was on the wall for our premier league campaign.
Agree. Pass over the top for a second goal was what sealed the FA Cup defeat - the Lyon coach I imagine will have taken note of that game.

Exactly. I am a huge Pep Guardiola fan but If we want to win the CL he is not the guy. The thing that terrifies me is that nothing's gonna change next season vis-a-vis CL. We will be playing breathtaking football at times and would probably win the league. But the CL nah!
If he is brought to win the PL well that's a club hierarchy decision but CL is essential for football dominance. But the insistent of Kaldoon and Txiki has always been CL despite of what our fans say so clearly there is zero progress there..

And this isn't 90s or 80's anymore. This inferiority complex needs to go. We don't get to say ,remember when we were in league 1 when billion dollars have been pumped into this club. Billion fucking dollars. This bonhomie between DoF and the coach needs to stop and we need to get more ruthless in our decisions and also in transfer market.

I am not an expert so I wouldn't mind Pep leaving or signing a 5 year extension but today was a big clusterfuck that needs changing immediately.
I think next season is going to be difficult, games like last night lose dressing rooms.

The likes of KDB, Bernardo , Mahrez must be thinking WTF!

If Berardo did want out, I could not blame him.

More dissapointed in this defeat than the gutless semi v Real Madrid
We had Yaya strolling around, lost Kompany within 10 minutes and really very little on the bench, plus it was peak Madrid.
In the Lyon game, on the bench,we had Mahrez, two Silva’s & Foden, all game changers in their own right.
How we came up with that starting formation, only you know Pep
It’s 2:30 in the afternoon here in Tassie, and I’ve been up since 4:45am, can’t digest what was served up.

It will certainly put doubts in players heads regarding Pep, would you blindly follow someone who got it so wrong again?

To get it right: this comment is in my humble view UTTER tripe. So many crybabies on this forum tonight.
Cry babies? We are one of the biggest teams in the world, we have lost and lost appalling in a Champions League Quarter Final, football is looking on and laughing, it hurts, f**ing hurts, we are far, far better than that team that played tonight.
We were embarrassing and unacceptable.

Yes.
As daft as i may sound I am also buying into the notion that Pep's intensity do cause some trouble after a few extreme seasons and few players would not feel like continuing.
He is an exceptional coach but some times geniuses expect too much perfection which sometimes players don't take kindly of.
The mental block that we have as soon as something doesn't go the plan has not improved one bit.

VAR is fucked. Look at the Arsenal Chelsea FA final. Shit referring all round. They don't like us and they are incompetent af but that's not the excuse we should make all year around

We've gone from having truly world class players like Yaya, D Silva, KDB, Sergio, Vinnie forming the spine of the team to having just KDB. And it shows.

Of course it hurts but take it like a man.

I would like to reiterate what some other poster had commented earlier about the change in how football is played now a days. Breathtaking pace with physicality all around the pitch. We were undone by all teams that possess such players and setup to neutralise our passing game.

Football never waited for Jose. Is it getting away from Pep as well ?

Would not have made any difference, we lost this game when the team sheet was handed to the referee.

Absolutely.

It`s not the 1st time over the season when we I`ve seen the team and though we will struggle. Last night I looked at the team and thought the same.

3 DM against left us stripped of our strength. Pep`s defensive organisation was left wanting again for all to see.

We set up as if we were playing the best side in the world and were terrified about getting over run, we played Lyon ffs.
Seeing that selection, the Lyon players would have loved it and thought " they're scared of us".
Pep has a mental issue with the CL and someone close to him should have the balls to tell him

This is true how many said fucking hell when they saw the team, then hopefully added we trust in Pep.
Well Pep well and truly messed up tonight and he and he alone is the reason we are out.
The first half was terrible and nothing like how City normally play. It was however what we all expected when we saw the team.
Subs made far too late again and then only one when when it screamed out for two or three.
Easy too talk in hindsight but many of us predicted this when we saw the team, but we are just mere football fanS not the alleged best manager in the world.
Got to add I'm a big Pep fan but he seems to have a mental block in Champions League knock out stages and he seriously messed up tonight.
I think mental block is probably right, so that paradoxically Pep is the wrong manager for Champions League success.

I completely agree.
