Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

This doesnt seem to be picked up but for Lyons second goal when the attacker dummies the ball the ball brushes his foot. Can see above at about 40 seconds. They showed this in the game last night with super closeup. (Has anyone got a clip?)

It doesn't matter now we didnt play well but this was the pivotal moment in the game.

Can somebody tell me the current rule and why this isn't offside?

Might have seemed rushed to you perhaps but it was pretty obvious to everyone else he was going. The club had plenty of time to prepare and they chose not replace him.
Anderlecht fans have given Vinnie dogs abuse this season - 'Kompany out' painted on the walls at the training ground. If he'd played say 15 games in the league for us this season, how many more points would we have gained ? Quite a few. And the issues with our defence probably wouldn't have led to a sudden reshaping of our team to cover for defensive inadequacies.

What I did see is when we went to 433 we pulverised them for 20 minutes, equalised and were almost certainly going to go on to win the game until UEFA were gift wrapped the perfect opportunity to get their revenge

Even after that we battered them and would have taken it to extra time but for the miss of the century

You should probably watch again.

Because what happened was that we did well in a 433 when they were defending a lead, and as soon as we equalised and they started attacking again, we conceded 2 goals in a 433.

Looking at the laws of the game surely the foul on Laporte should even have been a factor as the Lyon player became active.
A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
  • interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
  • interfering with an opponent by:
  • preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
  • challenging an opponent for the ball or
  • clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
  • making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball
*The first point of contact of the 'play' or 'touch' of the ball should be used

Morning after the night before... It still hurts.

It's all on Pep. Tactics spectacularly backfired and wrong personnel.

Starting a player that has categorically stated he doesn't want to be here (Garcia) makes a mockery of the badge.

As for playing Gundo and Rodri together again. We all knew that was a disaster. It can't happen again- has to be one or the other.

He also left it far too late before making changes. Gundo/Rodri should have lasted 40 mins at best together and one of them should have been replaced with Bernardo/Foden.

It was a shame not to see Pep take full responsibility. He has let the players down IMO.

I think he will have lost of a lot of weight in that dressing room after last nights debacle.
If you listen to Kev's post match interview, which discounting his obvious disappointment, there is more than a hint of this. I would like him to stay, new contract signed, but all things considered Pep may well be back in Barcelona before Christmas.

Get him home where he’s appreciated. Peps assistant and groom him for the big job
