Savage is trying to portray himself as the saviour of ‘grass roots’ football when in reality he has been throwing his money and his weight around for a few years.
He set up his own private ‘academy’ club called PFA Allstars a few years back, in part to promote his sons as prospective pros, and has now made this outfit the academy for Macc, having also briefly flirted with Stockport County and Stockport (Woodley) Sports.
It’s not very ‘grass roots’ when his Macclesfield U16s team in the East Manchester Junior Football League, probably the best in the region, has not one but two teams stacked with ex PL academy lads, with players travelling from as far as Newcastle and Liverpool every week.

Robbie is more the front man as he has a “name “and whatever you think of him, what he and his partner have done for Macc is fantastic. Averaging 2750 - a thousand more than they used to in the league (when there were away fans unlike now). £4m spent on infrastructure- the whole place is unrecognisable. And as well as being at the club every day he does a 30 min weekly Q&A for the fans on zoom every Friday. He gives up shit loads of his own time. My opinion of him has changed completely (although I don’t listen to his 606 show or it may change back.. :-)
