Macclesfield

We (wife) and I think macc has gone downhill since we left (30 odd years ago). Last time we visited the town centre (pre Covid) it felt run down. My wife grew up there and I went to Grammar School there and eventually moved there for a few years before we married and moved to Oxfordshire.

Mind you I'd probably still move to somewhere not far from Macc tomorrow if I could.

The town centre is turning into a wasteland yet the side streets are buzzing. The new Aldi, M and S and B&M next to the big Tesco won’t help with foootfall either.

Macc isn’t unique in the respect that the High St is on it’s knees. I don’t think anyone moves to a town for the shopping opportunities but for locals yeah it’s a bit of a sad sight

I think all town centres are dying, it's the consequence of social and technological change.

A prize awaits the person who can invent a 'new town centre' that people want and that works. But it's certain we are not going back to 1956 any time soon, no matter how many of the nostalgia brigade would like it.

Until a few months ago if you went into Macc say to M&S or Aldi it was no effort to also take in the local stores like Flour, Water, Salt (which has now gone) or Proper Sounds, etc.. Now with those big names moving to the just outside shopping centre there is no incentive to go into town at all.
Even Barclays is leaving.

Think the council needs to drop the business rates to get the town proper buzzing again, take a leaf out of what’s happening in Stockport and the underbank area which is on the up.
I still think Macc is a great place to live, stunning countryside on doorstep, loads of sound people about and good independents, think flour and salt is opening again under another name or collab which is good news if true.
