I was one.
I worked on campsites all over Europe for 3 years and parents 'popping out for a bit' was a regular thing.

The original info sent back to family in the UK by the McCanns was that there was a break in, and madeleine was abducted.
When it was proved there wasnt any evidence of a break in, their story changed to an unlocked apartment.
It's kinda weird that an abductor could stroll into an unlocked apartment, but decided to leave with a sleeping kid in their arms through a window right next to a door they'd just walked in through.
But this was the story the McCanns were pitching with help from the British Media.

Also if your kid was missing, would you sit at a table with the tapas 7 and write a timeline of what happened that night, then cross it out and write a second version. Or would you be out searching for your kid?
Also originally the 'Find Madeleine fund' was no such thing. It was a 'fighting fund' set up for legal expenses to help the McCanns .
When it was changed it wasnt registered as a charity but to a company in the McCanns name.

As for the Portuguese police being incompetent, based on the evidence they were looking for a missing child, not an abducted one.
