Maggie Thatcher

I have mixed views about her.

She was a good war time leader but it's not clear whether the invasion would have happened in the first place if she hadn't failed to act when it became apparent Argentina were gearing up for an invasion, thereby effectively giving them the green light.

She was right to take on the unions as they had become far too powerful, with British industry completely uncompetitive. Her biggest failing was not having a plan for the hundreds of small towns and villages that were decimated by the closure of industry and mines throughout the 80s, other than Norman Tebbitt telling people to get on their bikes.

In a nutshell this is pretty much spot on.

She did have a plan.

It is, apart from giving Argentina the green light. What was she supposed to do about murmerings discovered to invade the Falklands?
We couldn't just dispatch thousands of troops at something that may or may not have happened, nor would it have been much good asking our ambassador to tell Galtieri to desist, as he hadn't actually done anything, and probably wouldn't have listened anyway.
There is still this thread running through the Falklands saga that suggests it was somehow her fault, and although her faults were legion, this was not one of them.

There was a similar build up in the late 70s and Callaghan diverted a couple of warships to the South Atlantic which signalled our intent that we were ready to defend the islands. If Thatcher had done the same, they may well not have invaded.

True, but we also had some marines on South Georgia, we had a naval vessel in the area at the time, but the Argies invaded anyway, then invaded the Falklands, so our presence didn't deter them. Our intent was always to resist, but Argentina mistakenly thought they could overcome any response, Galtieri was in a belligerent mood by then and went ahead.

I'm not saying that the the invasion definitely would have been prevented but I think it's fair to say that Thatcher was negligent for not acting at all until the invasion actually happened.

The more I see of the hatred the more I love her.
I knew she hurt the loony left, the cadgers and the bone idle but didn't realise quite how much.

It must be hard for them seeing the height of the esteem she's still held in.

I'm quite reassured that she is held in high esteem on here.

The day I find myself nodding in agreement with the general consensus on here, is the day I really will start to worry about my fucking sanity.
Lol - I find the Cellar great, I never come across so many right wingers and haters in real life, living by the beach round here everyone is too happy. But you are right!
To be fair to DeNiro though he comes across as an old school Tory not a new school hater - I don't mind people who hate everyone equally!

You are strange as you seem to genuinely believe only hard core right wingers and anti immigration people like the poor - it is utterly bizarre . You also seem to believe that to dislike prejudice and to dislike simple answers to complex problem is somehow a dig at the poor, again utterly bizarre.

Yet you somehow think turfing out hundreds of thousands of people who are all in your eyes a problem because they are poor is somehow a love of the poor?

Though I have a feeling that because they are poor and foreign that in your eyes they don't count ?
