We had three shots on target.
Reading should have had a penalty when Nasty used his in our own box.

Yes I'd say we had our fair share of luck today. Not that we couldn't have won the game without it, but we clearly had some luck.

We should have had a penalty for foul on Yaya and possibly another shirt pull on Tevez, but not seen a replay of that. I also thought that Kolo might have been fouled in move that lead to Nasty handball.
Correct, Kolo had his shirt pulled in that move.

To anyone who says the referee does not influence a game, yesterday proved you wrong. Mike Dean I thought was excellent, getting most if the big decisions right. It is interesting to compare his performance with Atkinson's in the derby.

Both games started with a nasty foul from the away team in the second minute. Yesterday Mike Dean showed how both should have been dealt with: an immediate yellow card. In relation to a similarly nasty foul committed by Rooney in the derby, Atkinson bottled it. Because he is weak.

There were several times yesterday when Mike Dean saw a foul had been committed, but let play continue for a few moments to see if an advantage ensued to the team who had just had a player found. There was one in particular on Silva when the ball ran loose to Barry on the left in the first half. A Reading player got across to block off Barry and Dean not only blew for the foul on Silva but pointed to where the foul had been to show what he was giving it for. Good refereeing. Too many times during the derby Atkinson blew up too quickly depriving us of an advantage - Yaya's run on the left touch line in the second half being the best example. So we get disadvantaged twice - once because of the original foul, then again because the rags get to reorganise when Yaya had got in behind them. Bad refereeing.

The big decisions I thought Mike Dean got mostly right. Barry didn't foul Shorey for his goal, if anything Shorey tried to obstruct Barry. We had a very good shout for a penalty when Pearce was tugging at Yaya's shirt from a corner in the first half. They might have had a shout for handball. Rekik's challenge wasnt a penalty, it was shoulder to shoulder when Rekik hadn't changed his run to go into the Reading player. There were three or four times when Reading defenders stoodheir goun and were strong when our plyers went down: if Rekik's was a penalty, so were they (not that you will read about them in todays papers).
And then at the end of the game, four minutes of additional time were signalled. We scored in that time, there was considerable celebration and we ended up playing on for almost five and a half minutes. Atkinson directed four additionl minutes and the ball was in play for fifty seconds. Weak.

It wasn't a perfect display from Mr Dean, yesterday. I thought he got Aguero's booking wrong, there was a lot of pushing and shoving at corners he might have kept control of. But overall he refereed he game well. Shame you couldn't say the same about Atkinson after the derby. Shows what a difference the ref can make.

It was a foul. How can anyone say that wasn't a foul.

They showed it from a few different angles on the stream I was watching (Fox USA I think).

If you look at the header in close-up on it's own it looks like a foul, but when you see a wide angle shot it's definitely not a foul. Gaz Baz runs in, eye on the ball, and attacks the ball. Shorey looks at Barry, and stops dead to impede him. What was Gaz Baz supposed to do? give up.

A great goal and no foul from me.

Exactly this.

Watched the incident in slomo, Barry was off the floor when Shorey leaned back into Barry, it was at that point Barry’s hand went on to his shoulder, Shorey made no attempt to get the ball. Good goal and well done Barry, Come on you Blue’s.

How many times do you see a free kick given against the attacker when the defender falls over the back of him? It happens all the time with the ref claiming forward 'made a back for him.'
This is what Shorey did:
He ducked to let the ball go over his head but then Barry arrived and scored.
McDermott should bollock his player for taking the wrong option, not the official.
Oh and not one of their defenders appealed for a free kick until about 30 secs later.

...and that my friend says it all.Well said.

Exactly what I thought, he was probably mortified he didn't challenge for the ball.

I can remember watching United when they were winning everything and had a cracking side. On several occasions during the season, they'd have an off day but somehow manage to bag three points via a late goal or dodgy penalty. In fact, this happened so often, culminating in the Champions League win against Bayern, that I actually stopped watching the twats because I knew what was coming. I don't think we played that well yesterday, but we came away with three points, and that's all that matters at the end of the day.

Mind numbing. Once more lacking any type of tempo and Mancini was pretty disrespectful to not only the opposition with the starting line-up, but also towards our own roster.

You don't need to earn £6m a year to see how flawed the decision was to pick both Barry and Garcia.

FFS, if there was one game Sinclair should have been given another chance from the off, it was this one.

Could not believe my eyes with ten minutes to go when we brought every player back for a Reading corner?

For me, the gears are there, but we keep slipping them.

it wasn't vintage, but who cares, playing reading on the back of them shipping loads of goals was always going to equal them parking the bus, and in fairness they defended well, but their time wasting got right on my tits.

we have now shifted some pressure to utd, and going to swansea will be difficult, despite not being our best performance, it could turn out to be an excellent weekend.
It could, but I expect Utd to beat Swansea.

-- Sun Dec 23, 2012 11:05 am --

Barry did not foul ,instead it was other way round ...if it wasn't a goal then we should look for a pk for anal bumping on Barry ....
How'z that?
Exactly

Incredibly poor defending by Shorey. But still a very good build-up and great determination from Barry

Missed Samir Nasri big time yesterday. Also really what was the fucking point in signing Scott Sinclair? He can't even get a start against Reading. Feel sorry for the lad he was doing well down at Swansea and he's just wasted here I think he'll be off for sure. Walcott And ISCO in Jan will be great business for us because there the players we need to break teams down it was crying out for wide men yesterday.

It's games like these when titles are won and lost

Barry and Garcia were picked because Nasri is out, Balotelli is out, and Kolarov is out whilst players like Milner are not fully fit and it would be stupid to play them for 90 minutes on a wet pitch and the start of an intense holiday period

It wasn't an ideal line-up but you have to take everything into account

Milner was quality when he came on. That long pass he played to Dzeko, gave us the opportunity to score the winner.

I doubt if we'll get shut of Sinclair that easily , unless the club really attempt to force the issue ..... the player appears quite content to play the waiting game to me , he's on good money , likes the limelight of Manchester , and is in the neck of the woods that suits his girlfriend , Helen Flanagan.
