Over its short history as a city Manchester has been famous more for poverty than affluence.
While it grew fast as the world's first industrial city, mainly due to economic immigration from surrounding towns and other parts of England, the life of most who moved to it was grim.
It has remained a poor city by national standards ever since those days, despite several waves of immigration.
While some places do benefit from immigration, some don't.
Wealth isn't the sole yardstick.
