Manchester City Women (merged)

Fantastic result. The match quality was better than I anticipated and always nice to see City win a trophy. Moving forward, and considering what seems to be a total investment by CFG, should we expect some internationals on the ladies side? I noticed Arsenal had many more foreign stars-specifically the Japanese WC winners. As an American, I would love to see couple of Yanks recruited. We offer nothing that would effect the men's squad, but surely City could poach Morgan, Rapino, etc. for little more than Yaya's weekly wage.

Interesting to note that City's investment is still lower than several teams, such as Liverpool who have made most of their team full-time in some capacity.

On the subject of internationals, we do already have a few. We have Kathleen Radtke of Germany, Emma Kete and Betsy Hassett of New Zealand, plus four members of the England team's usual XI - Bardsley, Houghton, Scott and Duggan.

They already have an American player...

Not that I'm aware of they don't, and I've been keeping quite closely updated on MCWFC.

Hopefully the Cup Win will encourage more local girls to take up the game.

New York City could set up their own women's team

There's talk that NYCFC is in talks to buy a controlling interest in Sky Blue FC based in New Jersey, which comes with its own youth development program. The name certainly fits. That said, it might not work out - Sky Blue pulled out of talks with the Red Bulls last year when they didn't give them the guarantees they wanted, so who knows.

CFG have give indications that they consider a women's team as just as important to their plans in NYC as an academy, though.

Many congratulations on the teams first trophy.

Special mention for the great performance by the keeper Karen Bardsley.

Hope we can now challenge for the League Title next season.

Hopefully Man Utd will form a new Womens team so we can beat them also !

First trophy in our first year.Great goal and great win, well done the City women!
Except its not their "first year" © BT Sport.

Its just their first season fully adopted by CFG, City ladies/women have been on the go for a number of years, it was about time they were fully adopted by the club.

The team started in 1988 and was set up by CITC. I was at their 1st game at Boundary Park and the team wore hand me down kit from the 1st/reserve teams. At the time they were held up by the WFA as a beacon of what's possible in the game - a professional men's club establishing and supporting the female game. They predated some of the teams such as Everton who took over an existing club and were formed about the same time as Arsenal.

In fact I went with the City women to Arsenal for a tournament at their training ground c.1990 and what made the difference back then in the way the two teams evolved was that Arsenal started paying their players on YTS contracts, like the male youth players of the time, whereas City remained a typical club where the women paid their subs etc., but used some City facilities.

After the early 1990s the relationship with the club varied - let's face it late 1990s City had to concentrate on the male 1st team to ensure the entire club survived, and that meant the women's team was not supported to the same extent. This relaunch has finally allowed the club to match those teams developed at the same time like Arsenal and those established in later years.

Thanks Gary, its irrelevant now I guess, but it would have been nice if someone at BT Sports had actually checked some facts, before they re-wrote history.

Yes it does a great disservice to the 100+ women who have played for the club and those who were supporting the club during its first years. My girlfriend/now wife played for the team (and for others) back then at the highest level possible for the women's game at the time. The team were filmed by World In Action as a positive story on the growth of the women's game and those women travelled all over at their own expense to help the club and game develop. Prior to the Bradford City promotion game they played Bradford's equivalent on a ground nearby. As with those people who talk about City having 'No history', it's up to us to ensure people understand that our club's heritage - in all areas - is significant. Otherwise we're all guilty of letting them spin these inaccuracies and downplay our history.

well done ladies!! another trophy for city and a great first season for the womens team.
you are not alone in thinking this, so did I and probably many who watched the BT coverage

but as Cleavers & Gary James have pointed out it is a misleading simplification. The OS article is worth a read too

Congratulation to the women! Under the cosh a bit in the first half but grew into the game and the cross for the winner was amazing.

The BBC commentary annoyed me quite a bit as, as Gary says, an MCFC womens' team has been around for quite a long time. Yes it has been relaunched by the club over the last two (mens') season but it isn't new.
