Manchester Low Emission Zone

All this whining. What do people suggest you do? Air quality in Manchester is p1ss poor, mostly caused by congestion. Buses are slow because they are being held up by people who don’t really need to use their car/van etc but do. My experience of public transport is generally good just a bit slow so I factor in the xtra time to take it. We are all aware that global warming is a factor then how do you suggest we combat it? More people should be walking/cycling etc not just because of global warming etc but because it is healthier - we have one of the most obese populations in the world. You have to start somewhere. Get vehicles off the road is a start, makes it safer to cycle and walk. You have to start somewhere.
First improve public transport. Before the pandemic you struggled to get the Alty/ Manchester tram as it was that crowded.
(Look at the comments on here about attending night matches, if you can't get home via theatre you drive)
When you have improved the transport ban cars from the city centre to all but those that live there (who probably haven't got one anyway)
Improve the roads so that pedestrians don't get soaked from the huge rain filled potholes, who wants to walk along any suburban pavement.
Improve the pavements so that they are level and clean.
Before the council/govt. beat up normal people just to snatch revenue they should improve the existing infrastructure

So where do you start? Improve infrastructure? Needs money. Before you start increasing pavements and cycle lanes you need to reduce traffic otherwise you just create more congestion whilst putting it in place.

I am talking about many years of under investment. When Burnham gets his money is he going to spend it on improvements.....is he fuck.

I try to be green in everything I do but hammering Joe Public is the easy option. The Alty tram line was simply the railway without a train. They spent no money on it (bar the extension) at the start and very little since. The stations are falling apart pigeon shit everywhere, litter and dirt, you only use the tram because you have no choice.

As I keep saying. Where does he get the money? Under investment? Yes sure but that is because the Nasty Party have not given councils enough money to even carry out everyday things and they haven’t been allowed to put up Council Tax for years. The Nasty Party find money to give to their donors but don’t provide money to support people like you and I. They do not give a sh1t that you can’t get your tram or you get wet from big puddles in the road because they don’t have to use them.

I find Burnham's comment that Manchester's air quality is worse than Birminghams really hard to believe.

I assume he means the one in the Midlands, that's a physically bigger city. With the famous meeting of so many motorways, resulting in the name Spaghetti Junction?

For people in GM or passing through GM, you can check (the current) regulations that are going to be applied here:
If you scroll down to

Is my vehicle affected and am I eligible to apply for funding?

You can check on your vehicle(s) - you might need your v5c document to check on tax and any type (mine was 'blank').

It will take you to https://multiple-vehiclecheck-pay.drive-clean-air-zone.service.gov.uk/what_would_you_like_to_do and tell you which areas (Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Manchester & Portsmouth) you'll be potentially affected by.

Once you know whether your vehicle is potentially 'chargecable' you can answer the questions on the GM site. There's also links to register for financial support information (end of Jan).

I have an old motorhome, which will be charged £10 per day of use in GM come June 2023 - we are looking at replacing it with a new one that will be emission compliant prior to this anyway, but as per others on this thread they'll be many with commercial vehicles (builders etc) who are going to have to pay unless they get new(er) vehicles or get them adapted.

I hope no one wants to get a black cab to the airport. You will be charged more in taxi fare and then £3 for the airport.
As I said in a previous post, I am all for being green but I get fed up that it is always us that gets taxed

Perhaps Burnham could use the millions he gets from Manchester Airport. He basically owns it. (65%)
It is to lazy to blame the nasty party, Greater Manchester has made a fortune over the years from the airport why don't they invest it into the infrastructure instead of taking the easy route by taxing us.
