Manchester Tart

That's proper grub with lots of custard... a much more substantial pudding than the jam and custard pie.
Think it might have only been my school that served it but we used to have what they called Argentina Roll for dinners, it was like jam roly poly but instead of jam it had corned beef in it, served with mash, veg & gravy. I liked it but never met anyone else who knew of it, probably our dinner ladies being creative.

Think I’ve had that or something similar, just google meat roly-poly! I’m guessing yours was a variation of some of those.

I think I remember that from school too

We used to have our primary school dinners delivered in aluminium tins, kept warm in hot water. The dinner ladies only found out what was on the menu when they opened the tins about 5 minutes before we started eating.

Me too, they came from a secondary school about three miles away. By the time they got to our table they had softened to a mush, other than the huge lumps in the ‘mashed’ potatoes. Spam fritters just rolled out, we gads. My Junior school only ever had about thirty kids in for all six years, the Headmaster and his wife ran the whole thing, she the small classroom, him the big.
He was still the best teacher I ever had in my whole life.
