Alright. Lets work on the basis that everyone at the club - from Khaldoun downwards, woke up on Saturday morning and thought "fuck it, lets leave Mancini hanging in today's press conference and give him no assurances about his job and no support from ourselves."
If they did do that then they must dislike him pretty intensely. They were all in town, and will have all woken to the same headlines we woke to. With Hughes the reason given for him having to take charge against Sunderland was that Khaldoun wanted to tell him face to face and therefore it was delayed until he arrived in the UK even though we all knew it was coming. This wasn't the case on Saturday. Anyone from the hierarchy at City could've spoken to Vicky and made Mancini's day easier.
Sometimes you can glean more from someone's inaction, than from their action.
It's her job to brief and handle the press. Especially in situations such as post game interviews when club stances can't be discussed from higher up.
To stand back and allow the questions, that Balti has highlighted, was poor. She's there to deal with those exact circumstances.
As for issuing a statement, it was unprofessional of the CLUB to let the manager be undermined and under pressure on the eve, and day, of our biggest game of he season.
Forget behind the scenes politics, City should come first.
Spot on.
A press conference is where you open yourself up to probing questions - and you should anticipate what many of those questions might be. You should have credible answers for almost all of them (if you've done your homework) and you should know where the boundaries lie in terms of acceptable behaviour from the press.
That's not to say you should try to dictate the agenda. Merely to be firm and consistent in what you'll answer and what you will not, but NOT allow your manager to face the same questions over and over.... and over again.
A PR officer should step in and be firm. "The question is answered, MOVE ON". That simply hasn't answered.
It doesn't matter if someone's title is PR officer / Media Relations Manager or otherwise. If you're not contributing to that Press Conference, why are you there?
We can't stop the media reporting as they see fit. We can dictate our response to it. If we have chosen not to respond, then so be it, but I get the distinct impression the lack of response is indicative of lack of preparation / foresight and nothing more.
It's not beyond the wit of man to know that being seen dining with an agent will lead to speculation.
It's not beyond the wit of man to know that the press will question City's performance this year (just as they will Chelsea and Spurs, and Arsenal and Liverpool etc).
It's not beyond the wit of man to know that the press will speculate over transfers and managers.
This isn't our finest hour on the pitch, nor off it.
