Mancini on his team selection and The Carling Cup:

"I don't regret making the changes. I have big problems at the moment and we couldn't take any risks.

"If I had more players available it would be a different team. But when you play like us and Chelsea, on Saturday at 12.45, the time to recover is very short.

"They would need minimum three days so to play tonight would have been dangerous."

"Saturday is more important, the FA Cup is more important. The Europa League is more important.

"I did not regard this as a necessary sacrifice. We wanted to win. That is why I had four senior players on the bench.

"But I knew there was a chance we could lose because we started with six young players.

"I am happy with these guys. We might have lost the game but they can improve. If they do not play tonight, when will they ever play?"

Hopefully all will work out for us this season. Our manager has clearly prioritised. I personally think we have blown a big chance this evening of silverware. Its not the end of the world of course, Liverpool can hang their heads in shame and Chelsea to. Yet I cant help but feel, we should be winning these games.

i agree with what RM is saying...the other comps are more important

however there is a much lesser chance of winnign any of the other 3

we are not going to win the league - we wont score enough to do this and i cannt see us beating chelski on saaturday

the fa cup - with some luck we could go far but we all the big clubs will se it as a priority and we could end up facing one of them (even in an early round)

europa is a long long comp.....when it gets to the later stages, against some of the better teams RM is going to have the same problem he had last night - he is going to have to balance selecting a team for the europa games against possibly very important league games - hopefully our injury list will be substantially reduced by then howevevr

All you gotta do is look at what teams made it in the finals of the other 2 comps tho.

F.A Cup - Chelsea vs Pompy
Europa League - Athletic Madrid vs Fulham

We are far better then Pompy and Fulham so what's stopping us from winning either of them comps?? And to be honest I would rather win a Trophy that we have to fight for rather then winning one getting all the piss easy teams that way when we do win a trophy no one can turn around and say yeah congrats on winning a piss easy cup no one cares about against weak opposition's

Haven't read the whole thread but overall I think losing last night is no big deal.

Yes, it was a chance of silverware, but let's be honest it's silverware on the border of not worth having. No-one would be saying we had a good season if we would the CC and finished 5th in the PL.

Now we are out, we can concentrate on things that matter more, without the distraction of another 5 or 6 tiring games in a competition that's a bit irrelevant.

The league is far far more important, our. Club is being set up to qualify for tthe champions league and compete for the title ! They have put a huge amount of money into this aim and that is where they want to go.

If you think for one second a manager would be allowed to jeopardise that for what is now a glorified trophy for premier league reserve teams then you simply don't understand our owners or manager and what their ambitions are.

Honesty if we won it woopy doo we would show our first team is capable of beating the youth sides or reserves of the top clubs.

Risking injuries to key players in a joke cup would be an instantly dismissable offence I suspect and would be so small time it would be embarassing.

Initial team selection aside

What about the fact we were 2 -1 down - not even looking like scoring with Santa Wank upfront on his own

Bobby did absolutley fuck all for 15 mins, did not change a thing

Im sorry Roberto, but when we have spent over 200m in the past couple of years you would have expect to have a decent enough squad to beat West Broms second team.

We are a club who so far has achieved not alot. Sure 5th last year was a succcess, but trophies nothing. All this talk of us being the best club in the world in a couple of years needs evidence. I know the Carling Cup isnt the best competition, but winning breeds winning. Get that first one on the board. I hardly think after 30+ years of winning nothing we can start being choosy about which one we want to win first.

Playing 4 kids together in the back four is asking for suicide. Look at Chelsea, Utd, Arsenal, Tottenham etc in this weeks Carling Cup. A number of first teamers for experience and guidance combined with the youngsters. Thats the way to do it. Pretty confident we would have won if we had just stuck Kompany and Barry into the proceedings.

Im not saying play our first 11, but for christ sake pick a team that actually has a chance.

People really are eager for a competition that is completely devalued when every Premier League side fields 2nd or 3rd string elevens. "It's a trophy we could win" you say. Well, what exactly do you win when the level of competition and effort put into it by all other clubs is so low? What is there really to shout about? Winning silverware is the end point of being the best. That's what we crave - being the best. The Carling Cup is no longer about that though so I don't see the fascination.

With the additional Europa League games this year it is a distant 4th place in priorities and Mancini quite rightly treated the competition accordingly. Of course everyone is disappointed we lost - we certaintly didn't go out there to lose. But people going on like this is some disaster are completely missing the bigger picture. Silverware is nice but this is a nothing competition these days, that holds no prestige, and one can reach the semi finals by beating 2nd string sides along the way. Ferguson wasn't even at his game last night. The sooner the FA axe this competition the better, and it would allow the winter break that the league desperately needs.

Fair play to Mancini, you can fully understand his thinking. But I'm still depressed as we could have won this trophy.

I would. I was at Wembley in 1976 and want to go there again. At this moment I couldn't give two hoots what we were there for. There is no silverware that isn't worth winning because winning things breeds the desire to win more things.

So I hope all those cocks talking arrogantly about Mancini being a "born winner" are feeling a little bit more humble today. He's disrepected the club, the competition and the fans and that's why he was always Plan B. I hope Khaldoon kicks his sorry Italian arse all the way round the boardroom.

B)Try telling the players of old it's a nothing cup......it doesnt matter....
C) ANY silverwear is good
D) It would get a massive monkey off our back
E) Don't have one
