Mancini says Given can leave in January

Re: Apparently Given looking to go on loan in January

Given needs to shut his mouth. Joe was a city player when Given signed. If Given was better he would be playing. He's not so he's on the bench. Big deal. It's like he's the first player in football history to loose his place to a better player is it? He should neither be sold or loaned to any club we may be in competition with or could influence our season directly or indirectly. He need to be fined the next time he opens his mouth.

Mancini: Given can leave City

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has told Shay Given he can leave Eastlands in the January transfer window.

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Given has spoken of his frustration at a lack of first team chances after being overtaken by Joe Hart in the City pecking order this season.

It was thought City refused to let him leave last month but Mancini now insists Given will be able to move - if he wishes - when the window reopens.

Interest is sure to be high in the 34-year-old with clubs from home and abroad likely to make a move.
Respect

Following City's 2-0 win at Wigan, Mancini said: "I have a lot of respect for Shay and I told him the situation before the finish of the transfer market.

"I told him 'Shay you can choose. I hope that you stay here but I respect your decision and if you want to leave you can'.

"He decided to stay here and until January he must stay here.

"I understand his frustration but I need that Shay stays here and puts in 100 per cent.

"In January if he decides to leave I respect that decision."

I don't think Hart is better than him and neither do many people, he should have been given game time by now. He feels nothing he can do will make a difference and clearly it doesn't after he still hasn't been given a game after Hart's shocker.
It is probably very demoralising and Mancini is running this really badly.

And clearly from Mancini's statement, he's not too bothered if Given leaves or not.

You can't blame Given for wanting to play first team football. For around a decade he has been one of the top keepers in the country and as he is well into his 30's he needs to be playing. As soon as Bobby made his choice his days were numbered. I am actually surprised he is still here.

is it only me that thinks you dont rotate GK's unless for some unkown reason they need a rest. If Hart is our No1 and we playing are strongest team in PL and Europe why would he pick Given. Given will prob get carling cup due to maybe our 2nd string playing that in the beginning

I cant see why everyone thinks we owe Given so much, he only been with us 18 months and Hart been with us over 4 years now since we signed him as a youngster

Granted Given is far too good to be a number 2 but then so was Cudicini in his prime.

It's not just you. Goalkeeper's don't get tired. The more experience Hart gets, the better. I'd like him to play every game. He should own that shirt, own those goalposts. All our defenders should be looking at him with respect and thinking he's the man. There should be no worries about him losing form, he's a strong character who made the best out of his mistake by publicly apologising, then going straight back to business as usual... rather than just standing there wanting the ground to swallow him up. He's got 'it', and putting our faith in him is no risk at all.

We can't make someone like Shay bend to our will, he's more than paid his dues as a professional, he's a genuine class act and has earned the right to play. We can't make any false promises, Joe is number one for the foreseeable. We just need to find a competent back-up, and stop worrying about injuries, they are pretty rare in this position.

Imo, Mancini should have announced publicly before the start of the season that Given would be playing in all Carling Cup and Europa League games, as a club policy to be fair to Given and to keep his fitness going should Hart get injured. This would have meant that he couldn't have been criticized for 'dropping' Hart after his blunder, as Given's selection would have been automatic.

We all thought that though, I think everyone of us to a man thought Given would start the European games, irrelavant of how Hart played.

Joe doesn't need a rest like outfield players, he isn't using as much energy each game.
Europa League is important to us so we should play our best keeper.
Something has changed since last season 'cos we are tighter defensively.
Shay does not command his box, come out for crosses, or organize the guys in front of him. Joe does all of this and is at least as good a shot stopper. Mancini knows best.

Given is beyond well capable of playing in the game, we don't need Hart for them and it would keep Given happy if we are making him stay. Hart hasn't been great at comanding his box lately and his kicking has been shocking, what I've seen of Given, in the Irish games he's played, his kicking was excellent and he was well in control of the Irish defence.

Given would have been happier if we gave him the Europa games, it wouldn't have weakened the team, we could have changed keepers like we did with nearly every other player on the pitch. Can't blame Given for being so down.

As I said in an identical thread earlier down I think it is down to doubts on whether Shay's shoulder can stand a full season.

To be fair to Shay, he must have expected a run in the europa league. Can't really blame him for wanting out.

Ya I think he probably totally expected a game and was totally demoralised after he didn't get a game, especially after Hart's game costing mistake, probably is now, well clearly is now thinking that it doesn't matter how well he does in training and how badly Hart does, there is no way in. And that must be very, very demoralising.
