we are not as good as were in title winning season because we had the balance between attack and defence right
easy to pick out positives and negatives but overall we are far to flaky at the back for my liking and is why i feel we are not as good
I do have faith pellers will get the balance right but until we win trophies mancini wins for me

The number of trophies on the sideboard is the true yardstick and measure of success or failure in football.
Everything else is simply smoke & mirrors to disguise and camouflage failure with any team at any club.

Was looking for something and found this thread. Made me chuckle. Apologies for the bump, not trying to be provocative. Just think I'm ready to compare.

I think even putting aside our supposed defensive frailties, we're already a better team now than we were at any point during Mancini's tenure. Harsh I know, but also I think a fair assessment when you look at just how good we have become as an attacking side and how well so many of our players are playing.

I realise that those who value pragmatism will never see it that way, but the for us football purists all MP needs to do now is start piling up the trophies, which I've no doubt he will.

Respect to Mancini for all he achieved at City btw ... this isn't a dig at him. Just support of our current manager and belief in him.

It's still a little early yet as Kompany has been injured, we have a new CB, a new defensive midfielder and a new winger all of which could un stabilise the very best team's defence. Not forgetting the sale Gareth Barry aswell.

It could be April before we can truly decide.

Attacking we have been brilliant most the time.

It's a total disgrace that Pellegrini hasn't won any trophies at city yet.

Forza Mancini. In lemons we suck.

There you go again diving in head first without reading the post or thinking. I never mentioned Pellegrini or Mancini or any other manager for that matter. It was a general statement that trophies are the only thing that count for ANY manager at a top club.

You really do make yourself look silly at times.

Don't agree. We were imperious in the title winning season until we went to QPR away. After that we were slow and predictable right the way through until Balotelli's abortion of a performance away at Arsenal. Then we picked up again.

Either way for me when I look at the current team and current performances, as I say we're a better team than Mancini's City ... although to be fair to him that's as much down to having different personnel on the playing side as down to having a different manager.

I think as the season progresses and we continue to improve the contrast will be become more noticeable.

We have a better team now for sure, not as many ego's and disruptions

It definitely has some bearing on things. Comparing managers is always very subjective because of the differences in playing squads and the natural changes those bring.

If I were to look at our overall progress under MP as I say, so far he comes out on top of Mancini for various reasons. I think qualifying from the CL group is a big one. I think our attacking play is another - this is also intrinsically linked to a manager getting the best out of his players and the players responding to the manager's ways.

I think the criticisms regarding our defence are valid and absolutely fair. However that is just one part of the equation. And when the attacking part of the equation is quite so impressive it really diminishes the effect of our rotating backline/gk situation and the silly goals this has caused us to conceded.

-- Fri Dec 06, 2013 3:13 pm --

Or never maybe. It's fruitless.

Yes and no. I think this forum could do with developing a healthy and adult way to discuss Pellegrini and his predecessor. I noticed with interest last night that in the main Pellegrini thread there was a sense of frustration from Bob Kowalski and one or two others that people were enjoying what's going on under Pellegrini. It was implied both directly and indirectly that posters like me were going OTT in our praise of the manager because of how we felt about Mancini. I don't know. To me I think the two aren't related. I know my opinion of Mancini didn't effect my opinion of Pellegrini. Just as my opinion of Pellegrini won't shape my opinion of whoever replaces him.

The silly goals are costing us a lot of points, the attacking end are doing their job but the idea that they can just outscore the other side is a very risky plan indeed
Pellers will adjust i am sure but letting west brom get 2 back was really daft even though resting key players i agreed with

As long as we keep winning it's largely irrelevant how many consolation goals the opposition score after the game's won.

For me I guess I don't think there's a lack of balance between attack and defence. I believe in attacking first last and always to win football games. I've never liked teams who "close" games. I don't respect that because unless it's against far superior opposition, i find it spineless and without merit. If you're a top team you go out and play from the first minute to the last to score goals.

If you don't do that and you play %'s and are pragmatic, you better be like Mourinho and win big things every year. Otherwise in what is ostensibly an entertainment industry, your delivering anti entertainment for the sake of nothing.
