I don't think Mancini is in any danger at the moment, and so there's little point discussing who his successor will be. For the owner and the board there simply isn't a vacancy. Now, of course, things can change quickly in football and so how City finish the season is as important this season as any other. But I suspect there's still confidence that he's doing a good job. He has done what was asked in a shorter time than expected in winning cup and league, and though this season has been disappointing I think the Sheikh probably thinks that the August transfer window was a collective failure not down to Mancini at all. If he were to win the cup and finish a strong runner up in the PL I don't think questions will be asked.

What strengthens his position is the absence of any credible alternative. Guardiola is on his way to Munich and will probably stay at least 3 seasons. Which leaves the idol of many of our fans, Mr Mourinho. A very impressive record indeed, but not the man I think our board or owner really want. We're led to believe our board has been stalking him continuously for 5 years, but neither he nor anyone at the club confirm this. I don't think City go back a second time anyway. But the chances of City appointing him have decreased with the arrival of Ferran Soriano. He says that in 2006 Barcelona had reduced the search for Rijkard's replacement to a straight fight between Guardiola and Mourinho. They appointed Guardiola. Soriano says that, "Begiristain and Ingla were worried ...The Portuguese coach's method generated media conflict almost permanently and it was also a potential source of conflict within the club." Two powerful men in the club don't want his style and I don't think he projects the values our owner wants identified with the club.

Personally I think you've way off base. Mancini's on borrowed time with the new appointments. The change will come as soon as possible, ie. as soon as the successor that Txiki and Ferran choose becomes attainable. It's interesting that you want to use Graham Hunter's book to rule Mourinho out, but actually you haven't though it through at all. You say there's only two credible candidates, him and Pep. Except Pep is only a credible candidate because of the huge risk that Txiki took in replacing Rijkaard, someone who'd in the previous three years won two leagues and a CL, with him.

Billy, what would you do if they got Rijkaard in? despite his SA sacking btw.

Indeed

No way Pep was classed as credible before he took the Barca gig

Not only that, but at that point Rijkaard had had his first poor season at Barca and as I said, had previously won two la ligas and a european cup. Shows that when it comes to what's best, Txiki isn't going to care too much about someone's previous. It's where he thinks they're taking the club in the future which counts. That's why Mancini should worry ...

It's a pertinent argument though, especially when many say that the board want someone who can put their plan in place.

From what we've all seen of Mourinho he isn't going to be changing his spots anytime soon.

PS. You've stated a couple of times that Mancini is not their man as if it is fact. Is this true?

Txiki isn't going to hire someone he fired at Barca, and someone who subsequently has done nothing in football management terms even though he's had several jobs. More likely you'll see someone fresh like Laudrup who is perceived to have overachieved in his previous jobs.

Yes mate i just wondered what your thoughts were. Laudrup for me all day long and do believe we will go for him, i hope so anyway. You forgot to add that he is also respected by those that matter throughout Europe.

Laudrup, as well as being one hell of a player and seemingly a very good coach, brings a certain calm, cool, diplomacy which the club currently severely lacks. Very few of the names which have been linked with the job worry me. Even Valverde is so highly rated that it's likely he'll take the Barca job if Vilanova can't come back. Plus as I've said, Txiki picked Pep, so he's got an eye for right person right time in managerial terms. Really do look forward to seeing who they appoint when City and Mancini part company.

Mou in London

José Mourinho is in London with his family making the most of Real Madrid's free weekend. The Portuguese coach travelled to the capital after attending the inauguration of an exhibition in Portugal on Saturday, commemorating his life and career. Mou's presence in London has triggered rumour-mongering on social media.

I think Billy is more likely to be correct. I certainly think Mancini's position will be under close review.
