I don't think Mancini is in any danger at the moment, and so there's little point discussing who his successor will be. For the owner and the board there simply isn't a vacancy. Now, of course, things can change quickly in football and so how City finish the season is as important this season as any other. But I suspect there's still confidence that he's doing a good job. He has done what was asked in a shorter time than expected in winning cup and league, and though this season has been disappointing I think the Sheikh probably thinks that the August transfer window was a collective failure not down to Mancini at all. If he were to win the cup and finish a strong runner up in the PL I don't think questions will be asked.
What strengthens his position is the absence of any credible alternative. Guardiola is on his way to Munich and will probably stay at least 3 seasons. Which leaves the idol of many of our fans, Mr Mourinho. A very impressive record indeed, but not the man I think our board or owner really want. We're led to believe our board has been stalking him continuously for 5 years, but neither he nor anyone at the club confirm this. I don't think City go back a second time anyway. But the chances of City appointing him have decreased with the arrival of Ferran Soriano. He says that in 2006 Barcelona had reduced the search for Rijkaard's replacement to a straight fight between Guardiola and Mourinho. They appointed Guardiola. Soriano says that, "Begiristain and Ingla were worried ...The Portuguese coach's method generated media conflict almost permanently and it was also a potential source of conflict within the club." Two powerful men in the club don't want his style and I don't think he projects the values our owner wants identified with the club.
