I think the power and influence that will be awarded to Txiki Begiristain is being underestimated in the above. He isn't called the "kingmaker" for nothing, our club wants to be like Barcelona and with that has to come a similar structure or else we remain Chelsea mkII with too much inconsistency and not enough continuity (Chelsea's NextGen coach has been complaining that the club doesn't give their kids chances - they have an amazing academy at the moment and no one is getting a chance). The whole point of a Director of Football and the model we've adopted is to give the guy great influence over all matters of football. Like this, if true: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... -City.html
And you don't bring in possibly the most coveted DoF on the continent if you're going to strip him of the powers that make him so effective. This is the man who had the balls to push for Rijkaard - previously a managerial failure - and who some years later felt Rijkaard had done all he could and urged Barcelona to snub the world's most sought after manager Mourinho for their reserve team manager Pep. In building a continuity and ethos throughout the club, the DoF wants/needs a first-team manager suited to it and has a huge say on who that is at any other club. Even that imbecile at Chelsea, Michael Emenalo, got Benitez appointed.
Underestimating Txiki? Not all all. He will have a say in who Roberto's replacement is. He will probably prepare the short-list (working with Simon Pearce) but to have a say in dismissing Roberto? Not unless he can convince the Chairman AND Simon Pearce and that will take one hell of a lot of doing and both parties will have to be on board to even stand a chance.
Your statement also assumes Txiki want's Roberto gone and that's a big IF in itself. If Robby Savage is to be believed then Txiki and Roberto actually get on quite well. Further - till his feet are well and truly under the table he would probably stick with Roberto so he takes any flack and not Txiki.
The way these things work in the Middle East is that Txiki will only reach 'favoured advisor' status if he does his job well and turns the coaching at the academy round and gets the player targets he and Roberto have agreed on. Once you prove you do your job well your influence goes up.
Remember, Roberto has delivered success and was given a new contract as a result. It takes a lot for Arab businessmen to back out of that contract in less than a year. An awful lot. Txiki did a good job with Barca. That got him the job with City. He now has to prove himself.
