Mangala joins Valencia on a Permanent deal

Mangala and Fernando were both bad buys. Throw in Bony and it was an awful run of signings.

I think that these were like treading water signings for Pellers to keep him happy - enough for our owners to spend but not too much to hamstring the club. We are just in the hinterlands of the last of these signings now - maybe there was a faint hope Magala be coached to be a better player maybe there could still be that hope but just think back to Crocky Santa Cruz - they don't all work out.

Neither were necessarily bad players for a Pellegrini team imo, nor Bony.

Pretty unlucky fitness issues have made it worse.

Players cant trigger their own extensions. This is an accountancy move as it use the amortisation to drive down his book price. Also allows us to potentially make something back on him.
I don't think that's correct. You amortize down to zero over a fixed term, which in the case of a transfer is the life of the first contract. There's nothing left to amortize after his initial five years.

Porto had are fvcking trousers down with Managala and Fernando. They must have been laughing their cocks off. Didn't we try signing them over 2 windows as well?
I watched a bit of both of them play when we was interested. To be fair Fernando looked half decent but I thought Managala looked average at best when he was at Porto. What a ridiculous waste of money.

As it stands we also have an ex Porto in Danilo who we also happen to be struggling to move on. Portuguese league signings or related may well be cursed for us

Only if they see out the full 5 years without extending. If they extend at the end of year 3 for another 3 years then the remaining 2 years of the transfer fee is spread over 3 years rather than 2 years. Unless I'm totally wrong :)

I feel like Fernando and Mangala were two players whose City careers seemed to switch on a knife-edge.

Fernando was absolutely excellent in his first couple of games games and looked like the kind of player we'd needed to support Fernandinho for a while, but I seem to recall him picking up a niggling groin injury in a home game (against Stoke?), after which he was never the same again. I never thought he was as bad as people made out, I think we were just blessed with Yaya and Fernandinho and got used to watching world class central midfielders, but he never delivered on the potential it looked like he had in his first couple of matches. A shame, really, but I see he's signed for Sevilla a few weeks ago, so maybe things aren't all bad for him.

Mangala was also excellent at the start of that season. His debut against Chelsea was remarkable and I remember leaving that game convinced we'd finally signed a ball-playing centre-back who was somehow fast and physical. But then he scored an own goal and gave away a penalty against Hull and he looked completely shell-shocked after that. He had a nice partnership with Demichelis - I seem to remember them having an impressive run of clean sheets - but he was always inches from a mistake and he was part of the reason why the 15-16 league campaign was so bad.
