Maradona, truly the best player on this planet so far

I loved watching Maradona as I now do Messi but traditionally to be considered for title of world's best you need a world cup winners medal.I hope messi gets one or that will be the argument used against him.
Still just about Maradona for me.

Impossible to say as fact and purely down to opinion. However compare stats for same age. Messi buys and sells diego. Not even close, look at Balon D'ors, at a time when Ronaldo is here too. Look at goals to game record, also look at his record in European Cup/CL.

When all is said and done. Lionel will be the man.

wow!!

I did stop reading then

Your loss then. You choose not to read because you don't like what's written.

Compare stats game for game at the same age. Messi is Mr Consistent. Hence why he will be regarded as the better player when all is said and done.

I'm not talking Maradona down either, he's a God in football and rightfully so. However, you massively play down Messi by not seeing my argument which is Messi's is MUCH better at the same age. As i said, look at his trophy haul, collective and personal, his stats too.

Here's something nostalgic too.

That video clip means nothing to me, whats your point?

If Messi wins the World Cup with Argentina then that will just shade it in my point of view.

The best player ever is Pele. He was more complete than Maradona and had the habit of pulling out the spectacular more often. The man was scoring wonder goals at the world cup final when he was 17. This is astonishing. Just think about that level of brlliance. When Messi was just making his professional debut, Pele was already staring in a world cup final. He is a bitter man now, but I understand why. He does not get the respect he deserves.

As for Mess he does not deserve to be amongst the best until he achieves something at the highest level with Argentina. He has not even won a Copa America with them. At their best I dont think Messi is better than Zidane or Ronaldinho let alone Maradona and Pele. Times have changed and players can play at their peak much longer. Guys like Gomez can get 47 goals in a season in 18 team league.

Also Messi is better than Cristiano Ronaldo, but it is not by any big gap. Last season Ronaldo was better than Messi. Funny how nobody puts Ronaldo anywhere hear as high as Messi.

Pity about Ronaldo's (fenomeno) injuries. Never had the pleasure of seeing Maradona but Ronaldo's ball control was probably the best I've ever seen.

Did you not see Gentile kick the life out of Maradona in the 82 World Cup?

That's just an insight, in Italy he was pretty much in a boxing ring every week.

He played in the best and most defensive league in the world at a time when Italy was producing some of the greatest defenders the world has seen, to think what he did during that time despite the circumstances is unbelievable.

Modern football has never been so kind to your flair players; the rules, the death of tackling, the modern offside rule, quality of the pitches.

It's scary to think what Maradona would be like in this Barcelona team, I don't think he would score as much as Messi, but my word the influence he would have would be a dream to watch.

Messi needs a World Cup to match Maradona in my opinion, Diego pretty much single-handedly won one for his country.

Messi is amazing and the closest thing I have seen to Maradona.
But Maradona played in an era when defenders could kick the shit out of you and get away with it, Messi plays in an era of the game that is more like basketball where the ref blows his whistle for any kind of contact.
That is why Maradona shades it for me, he excelled while opponents were trying to break his legs every time he stepped onto the field.

Every generation produces the 'best ever' player. Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane, Puscas, Messi.

I never saw Puscas play, but I've seen all the others, and for me, the one player I saw and was just incredible to watch was George Best.

He had everything all those players had and more.

He could tackle, he could head, he could pass the ball, but he could dance around players with such ease when the tackles were flying in, it had to be seen to be believed.

Messi is the first player I have seen that approaches Best's skill levels, but he isn't as good as Best. I've never seen Messi evade a challenge, turn round, and skip over the trailing foot again!

Best did it all the time, for fun, then go and stick the ball in the net. Ok, that maybe a bit romantic, but anyone who saw him play knows what I mean.

It's a shame he is never named in anyones best team of all time, maybe it's because he never played in a world cup, but he is, in my mind, the greatest, most complete footballer I have ever seen.

And I've seen a few goodun's in my time.

The problem about comparing them both is the times were very different. Messi is blessed to have played in the best club side of all time. Maradonna didn't have the advantages that modern footballers have such as the modern coaching/nutrition etc. With the physicians and doctors of today Maradonna and Pele (plus many others) would have been even better than they were.

It's like saying Guardiola was lucky that he inherited his side. Remind me, what happened to the same side under a different manager v Bayern? 7.0

Pele, on this goal alone.... he did it with a broken arm too.

Tut - it was a broken rib and Ossie Ardiles was MOTM, scored a beauty, set up another and did that over the head flick. Pele was sat down for half the game...

A story about that goal - the image you see over and over of him kicking the ball, he didnt actually score, the keeper pulled off a blinder, if you watch it, the shot of the ball going in the net it sort of goes along the floor via a scuff, and the keeper dives over it. The world's greatest ever player couldnt do the skill and it look as good as it did in the saved version. So they cobbled 2 shots together...

No, no he's not.

Only players from european countries were eligible up until 95 for the Ballon D'or. Maradona couldn't have won it with 1000 goals in one season. I don't think comparing individual awards proves anything.

And Platini was as good a player as Ronaldo is today, imo even better. We're talking about a playmaker with on average almost 1 goal in 2 games in probably the most defensive league ever (Serie A in the eighties) - they won the league with 43 goals in 30 games in 86 for example, hardly comparable to a league where teams score 3 goals a game on average. And Platini had so much more to his game than goals. Comparing stats without taking into accont in what position they played, the competitiveness of the league they played in and the tactics of that generation is just wrong. Platini was easily as exciting as Ronaldo/Zidane/C. Ronaldo during his career and then came Maradona and destroyed his standing with the most incredible world cup performance of all time. It was magical. Platini went to Mexico in 86 as a footballing god, the tournament should have been his swansong but he carried a small injury with him, couldn't repeat his stellar performance from 84 and went home in the shadow of Maradona. Never before fell someone so great so deep within weeks, and he didn't fall because he was bad (he was pretty good despite his injury and scored decisive goals to bring France to the semi finals), he fell so deep because someone rose beyond the imagination of any football fan.

Looking at stats shouldn't rewrite history. I don't understand why incredible playmakers are so easily dismissed these days just because Messi and Ronaldo score insane numbers. For example, no one would say Gerd Müller was a better player than Beckenbauer or Cruyff. Yet now we look almost solely on goals? It's sad because there's so much more to football.

I think Messi can surpass Maradona, but he hasn't so far. More than enough time to do it though and I hope we all enjoy the ride as much as everyone (well almost everyone) enjoyed watching Maradona back then.
