Marc Cucurella

We need a left back. We have a centre half who can play there and a right back who can as well. Zin going means that's our defensive weak spot. We have no natural left back. Not that he was a natural there but he did better than the others.

Tony Bloom playing poker here, and at that he is better than Txiki.
they can easily say they rate Cucurella as much as White, especially if rivals do come up and offer the asking price 50m without much fuss. if that is the case he would have been an idiot to accept 40m from us weeks ago.
also Cucurella happily signed a 5 year deal to sign for Brighton without any release clause in his contract. that kind of tells me he was content with possibly spending that 5 years there or he has a shit agent. or just his Getafe salary was a fraction of whatever Brighton could afford...
How does this concern us though?

Brighton value him at 50m+, we don’t. If chelsea offer 50m+, how does that change our stance.

The Chelsea offer could be just a fake bid put out by Brighton or the player agent to get city to pay up
but let's trust the club and pep, it's done us well over the years

the only problem at left back is the bigger game for me, the better players and good managers will see a chance to get something down our left side and Liverpool and klopp use it very well with salah and attacking us

Yep - lets move on to our sloppy seconds.
We’ve moved on to second choices loads of times and done okay. Main reason a second choice player becomes a better player for us than the first choice wherever they end up, because they are coached by Guardiola.

Next year we will need a left back though? If 30 was our limit fine, offer it, get it rejected because it is too low then move on. It’s been a priority position for a few years now, we happily replaced Fernandinho straight away, as mentioned 42m for a back up whilst ignoring a problem position.
I guess replacing Aguero and then Fernandinho were seen as bigger priorities...

I am also guessing that finding the "perfect" Pep LB isn't as easy as most people on here would have you believe... good defensively, good going forward, calm on the ball, great short and long range passing... that's quite a wish list for a LB

There's also the elephant in the room of our current LB who is currently still contracted to the club, I would imagine that complicates things a little

Honestly, I'd barely heard a thing about him until we were linked, then all of a sudden everyone was rating him as the best thing since sliced bread. Can't say I noticed him. Either way, he'd be backup at the moment, Cancelo and Walker are our starting fullbacks. Sure, Kyle is getting older, but he's still first choice RB and will be for a while yet I'd imagine as there are no signs of problems.

Do I think we desperately need a backup leftback? Yep. Does it need to be a £50m one? Of course not. Move on, sign someone decent at a sensible price, or a young player yet to be valued at world class value.

I wanted Cucurella here but I'm not going to get all het up cos we refused to pay what we deemed a high asking price.
Moving on is all we can do unless you have a better idea that doesn't involve paying what is deemed over the odds prices.
Move on to what?
Yes it might have grated but it wasn't extortionate in today's market and now we have lost our "perfect fit" target and there aren't exactly many alternatives anywhere near as good. The whole saga is puzzling
