Marc Cucurella

I am thinking on similar lines....maybe we had a target that we were prepared to spend more on but they are not obtainable at present. We then offer what we believe is a realistic price for Cucurella but that hasn't worked either

This has been a very unusual transfer market where we seem to have an abundance of profit that we are seemingly wanting to retain

It has still been an excellent one for buys and good money for 2 players into their last year of contract

If I recall with Ruben we couldn't do a deal when first asking but the opportunity arrived late in the window. I am sure they are looking at something akin to that now, if we can't get Cucurella.
We are a very well run club these days. I expect we’ll all find out how we conduct our transfer business one day when someone writes a book……..Brighton looking for top, top money for an unproven but highly talented LB might seem too risky.

I think the Dias deal got done really quickly after the KK saga which kind of indicates there were parallel discussions going on simultaneously…….

City, ruining other clubs transfer strategies since 2010 ;)

From the outside looking in (thanks for having us BHA fans here by the way) there's still one thing I don't understand about this whole saga.

Having read much of this thread, a few things seem clear. You need a new LB/LWB, ideally a left footer, Cancelo very good in that position but can struggle defensively in the big games, you're a very well run club, great scouting, you don't need nor want to take risks in signings, Cucu has been your priority, Pep wants him, you've made profits on player sales this summer, and you don't value him much more than £30-40m. None of which I have reason to dispute.

The question then is WHY was Cucu your first choice? You're Man City, the best team in the country, one of the best in the world, with major ambition to win the Champions League. You have a squad full of players worth in excess of £50m. So why was your top target for the critical LB position, where you have a clear need, and selected by your scouting dept and manager, just a player worth no more than 30-40m? You'd be picking sides with global superstars 1 to 11, except for the average floppy haired guy on the left.

I find that hard to reconcile. It's not a dig, just doesn't quite add up.
Good post. I guess the answer is caution. Don't forget we paid out on Mendy and through no fault of the club he is now a total write off.

We generally do well on transfers, not that many flops. We've let a lot go when the price is too high. Look at rags or Barca. Throwing money at shinny things and end up in a right mess. Most city fans have faith we get these calls right even if this one seems odd. My guess is we might match the Chelsea bid or have others in mind. We might end up not having the best LB in the league but transfers on a whole we have done some great business this summer.

For those people think Cucucrella is not worth 50M.
Cucucrella 2021/22 stats at Brighton:

Defending:
+ Tackle won: 62/88, 1st rank at BHA (McAllister 51, Bissouma 50, Cancelo 54/89)
+ Successful pressures: 201, 1st rank at BHA (McAllister 199, Bissouma 146, Cancelo 119)
+ Block: 72, 1st rank at BHA (Veltman 65, Cancelo 45)
+ Interception: 72, 1st rank at BHA (Veltman 67, Bissouma 65, Cancelo 75)

Attacking (keep in mind Cucucrella played 10 games at LCB, Cancelo always high up the pitch), and playing for BHA not best attacking force in the league as City
+ Chance create: 42 (Cancelo 39)
+ Successful cross: 29 (25,2%), Cancelo 20 (16,1%)
+ Key pass: 43 (Cancelo 39)

BHA bought him at 18M, City bid 30M is a joke, 40M still too low.
50M is too high. We've clearly decided that and are happy to walk away.

While it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if we paid it, I'd also agree that it's too high.

Again another one mentioning Mendy like it’s remotely relevant. If this is the case then be prepared to never sign a left back blues because 5 years ago we got one wrong. No wingers either considering what we spent on grealish and the current return. Sorry guys.
