How?Chelsea’s strategy is scattergun but ours has just backfired big time.
We were never willing to pay the asking price. We don't think he's worth it. Chelsea do.
We'll move on and, hopefully this window, get the right player.
Whoever we sign isn't starting anyway.
Cancelo is our starting left back, Walker is our starting right back,
We just need depth for this season, with a view to being the starting left back long term when Cancelo probably shifts over to right back.
Plenty of others can do that job if we deem Cucurella to be overpriced.

How has it backfired if we won't pay 50m and Brighton won't sell for less?
The Chelsea move will bring it to a conclusion.
Part of our strategy for this signing would have been to advise Cucurella and his agent to put a transfer request in and try and force Brighton to accept a lower fee. If that isn’t the case we have just wasted months pursuing someone who we were not prepared to pay the asking price for regardless.
