The more I think about this, the more excited I am. I get some seem underwhelmed that this isn’t a lad considered world class or at a huge club, but he’s come up through Barcelona’s academy and won Player of the Season for Brighton in his first season in the PL. I do think Brighton will hold out for £40m but it’s the first natural LB we’ve signed in 5 years. Looking forward to him joining God’s Own Club.

Yes, but an imposing physical presence was not amongst his talents. That was my point, you can be a premier league all time great without having to be physical. Don’t know enough about De Jong to know if he’d be good enough for us, but I wouldn’t rule him out just because of his size.

Indeed, it kind of depends on your role, style of play as well as your talents, but if you are breaking up the opposition’s play in the centre of the pitch which De Jong does in the less physical La Liga translating that to the EPL you need to more like Rodri. Just my opinion and I could be wrong but this guy is getting a lot of media attention over here and I just don’t see it.

I know this is the Cucurella thread, so I don’t want to derail it for too long, but Mendy is in an interesting situation as he remains contracted to City til summer 2023, so he can’t just disappear as suggested without breaching his contract.

My sense is we will come to some sort of a settlement with him if he is cleared of all charges, allowing for us to release him from his contract and for him to leave the UK ASAP.

If any of the charges stick, clearly this will become a gross misconduct and dismissal situation.

I didn’t realise Mendy was in contract until ‘23, thought it was this summer. If he is cleared it will indeed be interesting what happens.

Yep - we signed him up to a six year deal in summer 2017

He’s still got a year to run!
