Marc-Vivien Foe.

Now that's a name I haven't heard many talk about in a long time..

Just seen it was 22 years ago today that he collapsed and died it's mad where the time goes, he'd actually be 50 years old if still alive which made me just think, wow!

One of the things that pissed me off during his year here was the biased media rearing it's ugly head not just against us but MVF too, never forget Foe (usually a DM) got ripped off bigtime for Prem POTM award when he scored the joint most.

They bizarrely instead decided to give it Alan Shearer despite him having fewer goal involvements, even though it was agreed Foe's goals and performances that month were colossal, it somehow went to Shearer when most disagreed with it and a few months later Foe was dead.

Remember seeing him collapse and hoping he's alright, it was a tragedy way before his time his poor wife and kids.

I know people tend to over hype someone after they die but he was a very good player there's not many like him around nowadays, personally I wouldn't have minded his physical presence and leadership in our midfield last season in Rodri absence.

It's not revisionism to say he was a top player especially in the leadership sense, Foe was a born captain and maybe he wouldn't be perfect in a Pep team style wise but last season in times of trouble, then a player of Marc Vivien Foé's sheer presence calibre and attitude would've been valuable.

R.I.P. Marc Vivien Foé gone but not forgotten, he'll always be remembered here.

I mentioned Marc on here only a few weeks ago.
The reason we don’t have a number 23.
A very touching, lasting gesture by the club to remember Marc.
Also, a poignant reminder of how precious life is.
RIP

Absolutely awful when it happened, remember going to Maine Road amongst loads of others to see all the floral tributes and shirts the day after, what a nice guy and great player we all had taken away from us too soon

We all knew he’d connections at West Ham but I genuinely believe and still do to this day he would have been a legend at City for years and years
It was a sad sad day and as some have said 22 years has flown by

RIP big fella

RIP Marc.
Remember it so well ,such a sad, sad day.
An incredible footballer and it's frightening that someone so fit, strong and healthy can be tragically taken.

One of my favourite players of that era. Played football with a smile and was such a good player compared to the shit masquerading as midfielders in the years before him. Was a great loss to that team in the next few seasons. RIP big man.

He was on loan for his 1 season with us and isn't it correct that he wasn't being re-signed, or had returned to his parent club, Lyon when the tragedy happened? I can't remember exactly, and Wiki doesn't clarify. My memory is that nothing had been confirmed for the coming season - his death occurring in the summer.

I remember getting a call from my mate who left a voicemail which just said “foe dead”
A very tragic event and one that was shamelessly plastered all over the papers with him lying prone on the floor.

He took a while to get going at city but around Christmas time really started to get in to the groove. Scored the last goal at Maine road by a city player aswell I think although I stand to be corrected.

I think there were talks of him joining permanently that summer if I remember correctly.

Anyway rip to a all round top person and peace to his family.

I remember when he signed for us Hammers along with Di Canio, was such a exciting time under Redknapp them days - he was a great player and covered so much of the pitch.

I remember just taking a job up London, bought Newspaper for the train and the picture of him laying dead on the pitch really upset me that day.

I remember my Mum coming back from somewhere having obviously just head the news on the radio, said 'Have you head about Foe?' I knew before she even finished what she was going to say, it was weird, I just knew. I was absolutely gutted.

His season at Maine Road encompassed our final season there in many ways, initially he struggled in a deeper role, but when Keegan pushed him forward with greater freedom, he developed in to a fine player for us and put in some truly memorable performances. The ones I recall being at The Valley where we were 2 down with not long left, he spearheading us to a point, Villa @ home around Boxing Day & of course his, & City's, final goals at Maine Road in a 3-0 win over Sunderland. He ended up with 9/10 goals from midfield.

The feeling at the time was it was going to be difficult for us to afford making the loan from Lyon permanent, and I'm sure Redknapp was sniffing at newly promoted Portsmouth, having signed him for West Ham a few years earlier. Nevertheless it was a huge blow to everyone in the City family, & he will always remain a poignant piece of Manchester City history.

RIP Big Man. 23

RIP Marc, a superb player.

I too remember the picture from the back page of the newspaper, it was f..king horrible and disgraceful but then that’s what the newspapers were like back then. They wouldn’t print it now although it would be on the internet somewhere but at least it wouldn’t be shoved in your face.

I was working in Bradford at the time and I heard a few inappropriate comments from Leeds fans, obviously not realising there was a City fan within earshot.

I remember waking up on my 9th birthday, opening all my presents, and my mum waiting until I was in the car on the way to school to try and break the news to me. It was an absolutely tragic loss.

The first game at the COMS, against Barcelona, was a few weeks later, and I remember the club selling FOE FOREVER shirts with 23 on the back. A few lads around me in the North Stand were wearing them for most of the 03/04 season.

I sometimes wonder how long Foe would have stayed with us if he'd lived. We'd have probably been able to buy him for the 03/04 season, but he had a pretty high ceiling and might have quickly sneaked a move to a UEFA Cup team.

He was far better as an advanced battering ram, right up behind the striker, rather than the deep-lying protector Keegan saw him as initially. When Keegan moved him up behind Anelka and Fowler he really turned a corner.

In a weird way, Keegan was probably the first City manager to try what Pep's ended up doing, with the one holding player in midfield supporting the advanced playmaker/goalscorer types. Foe really clicked after that change.

And of course Foe scored the last ever goal at Maine Road. A game against Sunderland I was lucky enough to be at, despite only being 8 years old. 3-0 win. Never gets easier, though, somehow. It's always tragic. Far too young.

I was in tears for the final when the squad had the team photo with a picture of him.

He was unbelievable from January through to the end of the season. Think it was Everton away where him and Anelka were unplayable at times in the second half.

Always remembered as the last City goal scorer at Maine Road so will never be forgotten.
