Have you watched much serie a recently? Standards are considerably low to what they were only a few seasons ago when inter, ac milan and roma were doing very well in europe and had some brilliant players. Im not saying italian football is finished, there are still some good players there, but great players like there used to be? Not in my opinion.afhald said:Italian football isn't growing up but in the last 2 seasons i have seen a Napoli beat us 2-1, Chelsea 3-1, a Juve beat Chelsea 3-0, an AC Milan 4-0 against Arsenal, an Udinese won in Liverpool. How can you say the italian football standards are low? It is not anymore the football we used to watch 10-20 years ago, but it is still alive as 4th main league in Europe or World even.shevtheblue said:Then you would be incorrect in your assumption. Dont really know what you mean by general, i was simply stating that italian defending wasnt what it "used to be" even compared to when they won the world cup. Comparing any further back would be a bit unfair considering the talent there was. I used to watch serie a when players like vierchowod were bullying attackers off the ball way into their 40s. In fact i remember bergomi doing it for inter milan, heck costacurta played at left back in the champs league for milan when he was touching 40. I dont watch as much italian footy as i used to but its clear as day that the last few greats (cannavaro, nesta with maybe chiellini an exception) of italian defending have gone to be replaced by cheap imports.Bigga said:"...Used to be"??
That's so general. Never better than when the likes of Maradonna, Batistuta, Van Basten and Gullitt played in Italy. Before the refs wanted to make names for themselves. Before the general standard of defending became a lost art, missing the Maldinis, Nestas, Baresis and the Cafus of the world.
It seems to me you missed the greatest period of Italian football stretching over 15/ 20 years.
Maybe not a pure breed defender, but him and roberto carlos excelled at defending by pushing so high up that opposition players didnt get a chance to get by them. Cafu was relentless.BoyBlue_1985 said:Bigga said:shevtheblue said:Theres actually more attacking football in italy than there used to be...ac milan guy, correct me if im wrong but there are more goals per weekend than there used to be right? But thats partly due to less superstars and the defenders are not what they used to be. Zapata and bonera, makeshift as they are even so prove defenders arent what they used to be.

Cafu a great defender
I have heard it all now

a) According to ESPN average attendance rates for City v Milan in 2012/13 are:
City - 46,,964
Milan - 45,974
So why is it Milan/Mario are "playing infront of an empty stadium"?
Answer: They're not - They just have an incredibly large stadium, far too big for what they need. So ya, seats are empty, but attendance wise... No.
b) Serie A is in 'decline'
In the past 10 years, Italy has 3 Champions League Winners..
In the past 5 years, MORE Italian teams have 'gained ground' on the top clubs in Italy... Fiorentina, Udinese, Napoli, Roma, Lazio... This creates MORE parity, and in my opinion, a much BETTER league.
Serie A boasts some FANTASTIC players... is a hot bed for serious youth products. Is it LOADED with all the greatest like it used to be? No. Financially, it isn't feasible anymore. But there are still loads of youth products here... Both international, but more importantly.. Local product. The on field product is fantastic to watch. Defensively, it is still tactically sound, but has become more offensive as well. This is a welcome change imo. Gone are the days of Nesta, Maldini, Baresi... But that's the nature of the game.. Those defenders dont exist anymore, PERIOD.

Every "fan" thinks their league rains supreme. I think Serie A is an unquestionable top league. EPL fans believe the same about theirs, as to La Liga fans, and Bundesliga's.
And most fans who can't take their "blinders" off will shit all over other leagues.Example: EPL is a joke to many foreigners. A joke league with joke defending and foreign owned oil funded teams. Me, I see the positives in the EPL. great players, great prospects, great spending power, great excitement. I get it, a top flight league.
I just personally feel that those who say Serie A is no longer a top flight league and in serious decline are just shrouded in bias, disdain for Italy, or simply dont watch the league.
But enough of that for now.
Cheers

Just hate seeing my league, which has produced some of the best moments and teams in history get shit upon for bogus reasons. It's a fantastic league to watch and the parity truly makes it a toss up as to who wins, who squeeks into european spots etc.
I love it... I know there are faults and negatives in Serie A... I respect that. But EVERY league has issues and sloppy areas. Nature of the beast

Like ive said, ive been watching serie a for a long long time. There is a clear difference in italian football to that what it used to be, imo its going to be to the national teams overall benefit with the likes of el shawaary getting a look in and even giovinco getting to comeback to juve. But the league isnt the powerhouse it used to be, the overall standard of football is nowhere near the level it was even 5yrs ago. Im not shitting on serie a, like i say ive long been a fan, but declining attendances and other factors have taken some of the shine off what used to be the best league in the world.ACMilan said:Skashion said:Please keep posting.
