Marseille (a) post match thread

Probably our best performance of the season, though Marseille are not the best opposition. We kept possession much better than we have done recently. Our build-up was consequently better, though we are still clearly lacking creativity in the midfield. Such a shame that we couldn’t persuade David Silva to stay one more year.

Pep looks happy with that centre-back pairing. Injuries permitting, I expect Dias and Laporte to play nearly every game. Ake and Zinchenko will fight it out for the left-back position, though I think we look a lot more solid with the former. Walker is in top form. He just needs to keep doing what he’s doing.

Up front we are obviously lacking. We certainly need to be hunting for an Aguero replacement. Let’s hope it is not just another “promising” player. We need to bring in some real quality there or we’ll continue to see the squad decline. Sterling and Foden were very good today. Torres was hardly involved.

Good solid performance, but we’re still a long way from where we were a couple seasons ago.

They were dirty bastards. Relieved we did not seemingly pick up any injuries.

It was also noticeable how they threw themselves to the floor a lot. It was quite amusing their RB fouled himself.

That's two grubby teams we have now played in the CL this season.

Excellent display.

We controlled the game right from the first minutes and fully deserved the win.

The intensity was much better, and even AVB's negative XI and tactics couldn’t trouble us at all.

Great performances all over the pitch both centre-backs looked solid Kyle was his usual dynamic self and Phil was excellent, as was Raheem. Kevin, back to his best, was my MotM.

The goals were brilliantly worked and the sort we have come to expect over the last four or five years.

Already clear at the top of the group, another three points next week would do very nicely.

For me it’s clear, except for left back. In games like tonight, Zinchenko is a great option. But in others he’s a disaster. Mendy can be great in certain games too, and is an overlapping option for when Torres in on the left cutting inside. Then Ake is the best ‘stay back and be solid’ option. Not the best link up (Zinchenko) or overlapping (Mendy) but he is a solid option for certain opposition. Cancelo too is showing some good things.

Ederson
Depends who we are playing
Laporte
Dias
Walker
Cdm depends who we are playing
Foden
De Bruyne
Ferran
Sterling
Jesus

That is our best team when everyone is fit.

IMO, we have creativity. The issue is Mahrez and mostly playing without a striker. A lack of striker takes away the focal point for our creative players.
