He made a decision, knowing if he got it wrong he'd be off. He's chased after him and then brought him down, it was not an instinctive reaction.
Demichelis himself has even publicly questioned why he made the decision to bring him down.

I mean the player has since come out and said he made the decision to go to ground on the basis of thinking he would get the ball, not because it was a snap decision.
As well as accepting that a red card was at risk if he fouled him.
