Pretty damning verdicts there by Shearer and Gullitt........about time indeed. I wonder what all the other so called experts who've tipped them for the title are saying now.
The new opening MOTD sequence is good.
The last time the rags lost on the opening day they won the title. Long way to go but still funny.

The last time they lost their first fixture at the swamp - 1972 - they didn't.
The last time they lost their opening league game at the shit pit wasn't 1972. Everton walloped them 3-0 in the first season of the PL (92/93).

I think!

From the BBC:

A day that began with the Dutch manager receiving a rapturous welcome from the Old Trafford fans as he walked out before kick-off ended with his side being beaten at home on the opening day of the league season for the first time since 1972.

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28718345" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28718345</a>

I may have been wrong in saying their first home match, as the Everton game might not have been the opening fixture.

There seems to have been a lot of confusion on the interweb thingy about that. If people are on about their first game of the season (home or away), then Everton did them 1-0 a couple of seasons back. And of course there was the famous 3-0 at Villa back in the nineties (you win nothing with kids). If it's their first game of the season and it's at the pit, then it may well be the 1972 season. The Everton 3-0 game I mentioned was a midweek game following a defeat at Bramhall Lane on the saturday (Brian Deane, first goal scored in the PL?)

Time to get the anorak off now!

I remember a 3-0 defeat at Everton in 2012/13 with Fellaini terrorising Utd's defence. I thought that was their opening game but might be wrong

I watched two live games and MOTD and it struck me that most teams were way off their best, particularly the better teams. It will take a fortnight

Even Arsenal who have the Champions League play-offs were way below their potential and fortunate to win

1-0, wasn't it? Bog brush header from a corner?

You're right about the scoreline - just checked on the Evertonfc website.

Even worse than using Google in this case; I didn't use Google! Everyone remembers the Villa game for Hansen's ''kids'' statement. The 1972 thing was all over Twitter yesterday evening and on the BBC last night. For some obscure reason, the walloping they got off Everton has stuck in my mind (maybe because they didn't lose many games in that period) and the 1-0 Fellaini game was only a couple of years ago.

No worries. Was only joking. Remember. I was at the Villa game with rags from Redditch. Didier Six ran 'em ragged.
If that was same game.

MOTD extra, the panel decided we should be looking at Steve Bruce as the next England manager.

It was also a Scouse love in.

Joke of a show.
