In 1966 De Gaulle informed the US that France was withdrawing from NATO and demanded that their troops were removed from French soil immediately. US secretary of state Dean Rusk responded by asking sarcastically "does that include the dead ones?" Apparently De Gaulle went ashen faced and left the room without saying another word.
