Matheus Nunes

I always go back to Gundo's Dortmund record when I worry about midfielders and their scoring output - 10 goals in 105 games.

It all depends on style of play and the ability to arrive into the box at the right time. That can be, and will be, taught by Pep and the coaching staff. It's not a case of scoring worldies every few games, it's just a matter of getting into the right positions to finish off chances.
It seems obvious as well, that Rodri is going to score Gundo’s goals this season. He’s getting into areas he wasn’t allowed to get into. And this signing will only assist that. He must have had 5 or 6 shots yesterday. Driving forward from deep with the ball looks like the new tactic this season. All our new signings do this including this lad if we sign him

In every country outside of UK (I'm from Sweden) you can watch every PL game live on TV. I have not written down how many times I've seen them play but considering I usually watch 5-8 PL games every week I have probably seen them play around 20 times last season. I understand I watch more football than most, but there is a lot of people that watch 1-2 games every Saturday and Sunday and have a decent perception of how most PL teams play, who their standout players are etc. PL is the most watched league in the world, of course a lot of people (not all or most) will have seen a PL team play several times over a season.
so you watch them on tv, have you ever heard anyone say, its good watching on tv but you get a better feel for it live,on tv they focus on the ball, maybe show a 10th of the pitch on screen,it cant possibly show you what the players are doing ,what runs they make, how they cover, all we get are glimpses of players, the scouting team will have their eyes solely on that player for 90 minutes

Of course I have heard people say that and I have not claimed that by watching a player several times on TV you know everything there is to know about a player. In the original post I responded to I thought you meant how many that had watched Nunes play, not how many that are season ticket holders at Molineux or are working as professional scouts.

100 per cent true I don't like to judge a player until I see them in the flesh. You can however make an educated guess about players by reading stats and watching televised games. Our main scout is probably Pep who sees first hand a lot of potential recruits from his technical area.

Exactly, same people said the same things about Kovacic at Chelsea, and yet I've already seem him have 2 or 3 shots from just outside the box, whilst getting into dangerous areas inside the box.

I never had Rodri down as a goalscoring midfielder, and yet I'll be surprised if he doesn't get 10 in all competitions given how hes clearly been encouraged to get into those positions.

This was his season highlights for Wolves last year.

His best work seems to be done in the defensive and middle third (though that might be because of the way wolves play). He also has some similar traits of Kovasic especially his running with the ball. Noteable that this seems to eb the type of player we are targeting (think Bellingham, Rice and now this lad) -all good at running with the ball from deeper positions - so is Kovacic and now we have one of Europes most successful dribblers of the ball as well in Doku...

He also gets stuck in in the defensive third which is great to see

Hey everyone, this is my first post on the forum and first of just want to say thanks for having me. I am a Sporting CP fan and big follower of the Portuguese league and Portuguese players in general. City have a big Portuguese contingency in the squad these last few years and I hope to bring that to the forum, With that being said and having watched Matheus Nunes from the moment he broke into our first team and now I would like to share my opinion not this possible transfer.

Nunes joined Wolves last season towards the end of the window due to Sporting needing to money however it was ever Nunes intention to leave the club. In fact he wanted to stay at Sporting and he even initially rejected the first Wolves approach. The Wolves move was a horrible transfer for him as the club is in dire shape and although he had a underwhelming season by the standard of which I have seen him, he still showed various moments of quality throughout the season. In fact you can look at the game vs United this season at Old Trafford where he absolutely ran rings around everyone in the midfield. With that being said I am going to give an analysis on him based on his last season at Sporting (21-22) as that is the player I believe City will be geting and what I believe he can bring to Manchester City. There is a reason Pep was so fond of Matheus Nunes after our class in 21-22 and Sporting have a solid track record of providing top player to this league. Look no further then Palhinha who deserves a big transfer soon and Bruno Fernandes from the other side of Manchester

PLAYSTYLE: Matheus Nunes is a old fashioned high energy Box to Box midfielder who never stops running the full length of the pitch and is a press resistant player who completed 3.19 dribbles per 90 and boasted a 86% pass accuracy in the 2021/2022 season. A Interesting stat for Nunes that season is that he completed more dribbles (85) then shots, key passes and interceptions combined (75). Blessed with brilliant technical ability especially in tight spaces and a fantastic passing range it is no wonder why his skill set is so sought after. Nunes played in the CM role in Sporting's 5-2-3 set up and he is the one responsible for driving the ball forward for Sporting and his high energy means he also helps out defensively to good effect. He created and scored various opportunities by driving in late or pushing forward from the midfield. Matheus Nunes is very quick for a midfielder and his deceptive body feints allow him to create space needed to execute a pin point pass to his teammates. Matheus Nunes has also bulked up significantly and has begun to fill out his tall frame which makes him more imposing on the pitch whilst still being his elegant best with the football. Matheus Nunes always possessed a natural football ability which is what caught the eye of the Sporting scouts but what was lacking was the in game understanding and tactical awareness which has been heavily improved thanks to extensive work by Amorim. His natural ability along with the fact he is still learning the game means that Pep sees a player who he can mold into the exact player he wants in the City midfield. Additionally Nunes is versatile enough to play in a wide midfield role if City ever needed to overload the midfield. He is a press resistant player who is able to carry the ball up the field in stride. He is still young enough to mold and develop and is someone who would be a great addition to a City team who is looking to add younger quality players.

STRENGTHS: Technical ability, Passing long and short, Stamina, Shot power, Dribbling, Strength

WEAKNESSES: Heading, Shooting, Defensive Consistency and Awareness, End Product (lack of goals or assists)

I am not sure if he will be an instant starter but I have no doubt that he has the ability to eventually be a starting midfielder at Manchester City. In my opinion this would be a great piece of business by Manchester City.

Thanks for that 1906 and welcome to Bluemoon.
That’s a brilliant in depth analysis and confirms what most of us on this forum knew ie he is a quality footballer and would be an excellent addition to our squad.
In his last game for Wolves we did see signs of petulance from him which resulted in him getting sent off. Is he prone to this type of behaviour or was it a one off? I certainly wouldn’t wish us to sign a player with the type of temperament Fernandez at our neighbours has!

I agree about Rodri moving forward to get into goal scoring positions. And I love it.
