The City Football Group are considering teaming up with Nexen Tire (revenue: US$1.7bn) to invest in a South Korean team according to Naver.

Were this to go ahead, the team would become the fourth after NYCFC, Melbourne City and Yokohama F. Marinos to join the City Football Group.

I think that this deserves its own thread.

I feel cheated.....I went on the City Abu Dhabi trip and asked Cheeky at a Q & A where he thought the next club would be after NYCFC,Melbourne and Yokohama.......he said Malaysia would be good next........suppose its close to Korea!

KUALA LUMPUR - English football giants, Manchester City expressed a desire to collaborate with the Super League champions in 2014, Johor (JDT).

Johor Football Association (BNJ) in a statement told the media, representatives of Manchester City has applied for permission to meet with Tunku Mahkota Johor (TMJ), Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim for that purpose.

"Vice Manchester City has applied for permission to meet with TMJ and President of BNJ on January 12, 2015.

"They will discuss the development of football both teams and the opportunity to work with JDT team," the statement said today.

Looks like Malaysian team will be soon as well in the CFG. This article is from month back, so quite recent.

Thanks for that,at least he wasnt shitting me....good old Cheeky.

A lot of the South/East Asian leagues are quite like the J-League, with companies owning most of the teams. If you look at the K-League, only four of 12 teams are not already owned by a major manufacturing/utilities company of some type (Nexen Tire do not already own a team, unlike Nissan). Unless CFG are looking at a lower-league team, that means it's one of the following, then:

Daejeon Citizen
Gwangju FC
Incheon United
Seongnam FC

Nah, not sure I agree with that. All of the other news articles I've seen about this (I've seen at least 3-4) never once suggested a buyout, even partial. The deal with Johor Tigers is just a youth development agreement. They send us some youths to train, we loan them some coaches and give them access to scouting resources so they can recruit more Asian players they might otherwise not have found. No ownership changes there.

Did a bit of googling and found this:

It's from Nexentire's website and it looks like City contacted them through a customer support page, which is a bit odd.

You feel cheated?! I thought we only owned two other clubs and now I hear it might be four!

Seems I was wrong about Nexen. They do in fact own a team already. Thing is, it's an amateur team and I don't know what level they play at but they're not in the top four tiers, and I have a suspicion that they probably don't even play in a league which has promotion to the professional game, though that's based on a hunch and nothing more. I can't quite see us investing in an amateur team, but...well, I don't know, I guess we're still in for a top division side, but it makes the situation more interesting I guess.

Apparently Nexen have now officially denied the story, saying the only contact between the two clubs has been regarding sponsorship. Could be trying to cover it up, but could be another fake story all along.

I think we'll end up with a lot of partnerships with clubs around the world that won't necessarily be part of the CFG.

The JDT link in Malaysia seems to be just an partnership arrangement rather than any sort of takeover. I guess it remains to be seen with South Korea, although I would imagine we'd be looking outside of Asia next.
