Let me give you an example of safety relating to this incident - part of the stewards job is checking for lost property in his area,if you have fans from other parts of the ground walking around then this could be deemed a security risk,as we have to protect our areas and check they are safe before we finish our shift.

What is to stop somebody walking round the ground looking for lost phone, items of clothing and picking them up and going home with them ?

As stewards we are there to protect all supporters and we can only do that properly if we have a clear and empty area.

If you worked in an office block would you walk round the other parts of the building before leaving work to come out at a better exit for you or would this be considered strange behaviour ?

All I am trying to do is make you aware of the clubs perspective in dealing with crowd control and steps they have to carry out to ensure everybodys safety in the overall scheme of things,I can assure you it is not about being awkward. We are trained to be pleasant at all times and as in all walks of life there has to be ground rules laid down for all...

And what is to stop a steward putting it in his pocket and going home with the items ? I generally get on very well with the stewards at every ground, I do what other people have said and cut them some slack. But I had an argument with a steward at COMs as I genuinely did not believe he was going to return the items he found.

I have seen many times the stewards almost racing around the rows for programmes that have been left. Ok only £3 and how do you prove who's it was but I expect that many of those don't get back to the original owner.

I found a City bag with stuff in it, quite close to where I sit. The steward nearby said "oh the lad who sits there has just come back looking for it and couldn't find it. Give it to me and I'll sort it.". I said "I know the lad who sits there by sight and he's in the same seat every week. Surely if he came back for it he'd know where his seat is". I said I would bring it to the next game and make sure it was returned to him and I offered my season card details in case he didn't trust me. I did as I said and the lad was chuffed to get his stuff back. I cannot prove it but the way the steward lied and the way he reacted I do not believe he would have safely returned it. Put "allegedly" and every other caveat around this if you need but that is my opinion.

Last night I saw another steward pick up a bag that clearly has a City shirt or scarf or some item of clothing in it. He picked it up looked inside and walked off with it. So what happens with that Trigger or Wembley76 ? Is that logged int he lsot property and there today for the owner to claim. Great if it is, shows the stewarding works and I only witnessed one bad example in the past. Maybe you could check it was logged and handed in last night. I can give you the block number and roughly which row if you want.

I'm not having a go at stewards in general, 99% can be brill but 1% can be bad. But my stance when finding things is that I will personally ensure they are returned to the owner. At City I have done that with a leather jacket, a mobile phone and a city bag of stuff. Would I have trusted that particular steward with any of those, sorry not on your life !

yeah yeah ;)

It's not my proudest moment, but, 15 years old, when South Park was the "cool" show, a kid called Tim, ginger hair, it amused me at the time, and probably every other shirt since has had it on!!

I cannot blame stewards acting up a bit at times as they have to deal with a lot of nonsense. Fans should could cut them a bit of slack

I think the opposite. Accidents happen when things get left alone and no one questions things like this. Stewards are not paid to ACT UP either. They are paid to act professionally and do a job. If they don't want to do that then they should be looking elsewhere for work.

Most Stewards are brilliant. Its just the odd ones who make bad decisions or decide to do nothing when they SHOULD do something. Common sense should always prevail.

Showsec supervisors seem to be the worst culprits for bullying.

I was talking 'in general', fella. Of course, there will be the occasional bad apple.

We all have our limits. There is only so much we can put up with. At home games over the years, I have witnessed many incidents of stewards being spat on, physically abused, humiliated, threatened and intimidated by Blues. You cannot blame them for sometimes being a bit agitated or grumpy. A bit of empathy wouldn't go a miss.

I wouldn't go getting upset or angry because a steward was a bit abrupt or appeared pre-occupied.

An incident card should be filled in and handed to our supervisor, in the past I have done this for spectacles and keys. If you want to give me a PM with the details I will check for you.

I will only say that if you have a problem with a steward, take his number and ensure you report all the facts, at our briefings we have many emails giving feedback on our behaviour, believe it or not we have far more thanking us for our assistance.

Just a side note and not looking in anyway for a pat on the back as I would have done this for any blue, but on Saturday two irish season ticket holders in 107 at the chelsea game who I have got to know and talk to asked where the nearest Truckstop was to COM's. They were coming over for last nights game whilst delivering in Middlesbro and driving 40' vehicle, they normally fly to the ground.

They parked up in Trafford Park, they asked where they could get a taxi from outside the ground back to Trafford Park, I told them I would give them a lift as it wasn't too far out of my way.

They accepted and were thankful, and I was only too pleased to have assisted blues.

It is too easy in life to be negative as can be seen on many many a thread on here, and yes I know there are bad apples in every job, but the vast majority of our stewards are excellent and if their are bad ones I want them outed as well as you, but please remember that perception is a wonderful thing and just because you don't agree with what they may do in a particular instance doesn't make them a bad steward or in the wrong as they may well be doing what they have been told to do or trained to do.

I think everyone who is a regular on here as sort of got to know you and knows you are a good egg. That is why I stressed the "99% are good 1% bad".

Yes! I am moving to 110 from 107 in two games time ;)

Does this mean you'll be telling me to sit down in 109?

Or buying me a beer?

Choose carefully, our friendship relies on this!!

Can someone please explain something to me.

Last night after the game we decided to watch the highlights put on the big screen after every game.
We made our way along the row and stopped and stood to watch with all the rows around us empty.
I wanted to see if the free kick was over the line.

A steward came over and said "leave the ground now please"
I said " we are just watching the highlights"
Steward " leave the ground now please"
I said " why do they put the highlights on if you are not allowed to watch them ?"
Steward " I have asked you twice now make your way out of the ground"
I said " I am just watching this first if you don't want me to watch it then turn it off you jobsworth use some common sense"
I must admit I was cheesed off at this point and having him stood next to me spoiling my "matchday experience" riled me a bit

Steward "If you don't move I will get you ejected from the ground"

My reply was something i don't need to print but I think you can imagine what it went like! and so we left.

So can you watch the highlights or not?

Thanks for all the posts, a pretty mixed bag tbf.

I think the stewards who posted raised some valid points but they don't address the issue for me. The problem is one of correct and appropriate behaviour when dealing with members of the public ie. your customers. I'm still no clearer on what the rules say about exiting after the game but its clear other people walk a few rows around the inside of the stadium without being 'set upon'. If the rules say this should not happen then you need to apply consistency...but do it in a nice and friendly way. if there are no specific rules then you need to decide whats more important clearing the ground quickly by whatever means necessary or allowing your 'customers' to exit the ground at their leisure. Judging from your new customer 'promises' as espoused by the OS, I would say the head of customer services needs to have a sit down with the head of operations because their views are clearly diammetrically oppossed if you promise to treat your customers oneway but actually treat them the opposite.

In terms of the aggressor, the initial argument began with a guy in a yellow jacket but he was quickly backed up back a steward in an orange jacket who went nose to nose with me.

I've had a few PM's, and have replied so thanks for those. Including one from the supervisor who arrived at the end of the argument, again thanks for your response.

On a side note, I generally take a few customers to games when I can, normally the less popular games tbh. Last night I took a friend for his first game at COMS, he was shocked at the stewards behaviour and after I spoke to him today he said that it overshadowed the game and overall experience (of city square etc).

Well done to those involved (*slow clap*).

-- Fri Oct 01, 2010 4:20 pm --

There's good stewards, bad stewards. Out of all the people on here who are at the matches there's not huge amounts of complaints is there?

My personal experience from last night ...

Firstly, my card wouldn't let me in, Steward inside the gate shouted one of the jacket dudes outside who promptly swiped me in, apoligising for my card not working, 2 minutes from card not working to outside steward consulting colleague for swipecard to grant nme access into the ground, nice one fellas

At half time I followed my nose to the sweet smell of smoke at the bottom of the spirals and chuffed away for a few minutes with some fellow nicotine addicts, when the female steward offered us the option of putting our fags out or, leaving the stadium we all took option one and all thanked each other. Nice to be nice.

Smoking in the bogs is a tw@ts trick though, I'm a better more considerate smoker than them ;-)

The stewards have to manage crowds of thousands en masse and it must be hard at times, they get my vote all day

except for ShowSec who (as has been pointed out) are all
policemen-wish-they-was knobheads with a attitude that ...

TBH I agree with you, the highlights are shown directly after the game has finished and must be for the supporters to view , I think you were harshly treated as I know for a fact that on level 1 in front of me there were still many fans leaving on the stairways after the highlights had finished being shown.

I would have thought that the family stand areas would be no thoroughfare for other fans - which is fair enough - there are lots of kids about and nobody wants to see them get barged into by someone in mad rush to get to the bus stop.

I'm not saying that the OP was confrontational, but there does seem to be a lot of people who don't like being asked to do or not do something - whether it's illegal, against the ground regulations or to show consideration to others.

The people that don't want to stick to ground regulations would be the first on here complaining if they couldn't sit in their seat as someone else was in it and the stewards said 'we don't do rules any more mate - people can sit where they want, smoke whenever they want, push kids about - we don't give a toss anymore'

Talking of pricks (:-o) I was getting on the bus when there was a surge, as always, from the side and I was pushed to the left hand side of the entrance to the bus. A few people who were ready to get on were pushed right out of the way and I ended up in their place. A copper looked me in the eye and said something along the lines of 'Oi you stop pushing or I'll have you out of there'. The fact that there were about forty people pushing me seemed to have passed him by - even when I pointed this fact out. He just said 'I'm warning you stop pushing' What a knob!
