Never have, but I used to play Lacrosse for a team in Ashton-under-Lyne, that's a fairly brutal sport too.
Smash somebody in the head with your stick? No problem, just sit out the next minute and come back on.
And a solid rubber ball doesn't half hurt when it hits you.

Anyway, Altrincham ice rink........ :)
Did you know Dave Pye or John Walton from the Lacrosse Club?

It's Stalybridge Junior's Football Club now, I've lived on the Avenue opposite for the past 36 years.

Watching the Olympics over the last week and one thing that has struck me is listening to the commentary on various sorts. Rowing, swimming, gymnastics, archery and more, the commentators offer genuine insight and explain stuff to the viewer offering their experiences to what is happening with no agenda whatsoever, maybe only favouring team GB which is fair enough. Now contrast that to football commentators over here and it just makes me think on how shit it is. All we hear is commentators/pundits give their opinion rather than technical detail on what's going on in the game. This bollocks about city being boring, if not in play then in the fact it's boring winning 6 out of 7 prem leagues. Not once have I heard how boring it is that the USA gymnastics girl winning all those golds over the year's or this French kid smashing the swimming at the moment.
Our football media really is the pits.
I know my little rant was off speedway topic but I thought it had to be said.
Good points what do we know about the Olympic commentators ? I mean what do they do when they not commentating on for example archery ? It must be a specialist knowledge and job but it’s not an exactly popular outside the Olympics. How do they pay the bills what else do they do ?

It was over 30 years ago mate and I only played for a couple of years after I left school (whilst I was at sixth form) so my memory of who trained us is a bit sketchy. I do have memories of it being a Canadian/American ex-pro player whose name was something like Louis Prince III (definitely III but not so sure of the rest of it) but yeah, we did used to trained on Stalybridge Juniors pitch.

They were both there 30 years ago, Dave is late 60's now but played until he was 60, John is around 57 and was mentioned in the "off thread" posts, Greyhound Trainer at Sheffield after Belle Vue Closed.

Was a brutal sport Lacrosse, saw a few games there, proper tough.

I would imagine they probably work within the sport and are up to date with current tactics, training methods etc. Unlike our football pundits who all come from the same era and cannot compute in their head that football has moved on.
When they do there all time great teams shit, it's 90% filled with players from there era.
They cannot cope with the fact that there are probably 5-6 defenders playing now that are better than ferdinand, terry etc. There are probably 5-6 players now better than Gerrard etc.

When they get a current manager in the studios talking about tactics, neville and carragher act like they have just discovered fire.

Then you get the older generation like souness who claim he would find it easy playing football today. Absolute bollocks, he was a top player in his day but he was playing against I would say league 2 level players from today. There more players today that are alot more professional in terms on how they play so therefore I would say it's harder to play today.

Gone off pisst there but basically saying our pundits are outdated and don't want there ego hurt so there era was the best and pundits from other sports are probably still within the game and can offer more balanced knowledgeable opinions.
