It smacked of desperation,even then we were unbeaten in about 10 games and had only conceded a couple.
It's almost as if by printing something negative you hope to have a negative effect.

I think he'd written the article and was waiting for an opportune moment to print it. But we were already through that poor spell of form, and the later they left it, the more ridiculous it looked. So they printed it anyway, rather than just binning it.
