I actually think that, perversely, and entirely accidentally, we’ve got the best of both worlds. This week, when (a) we’re playing a click bait club and (b) Phil destroyed them, the media is of course all over him and he is all over the media. That apart, I could count the number of Phil Foden articles or features this season on one hand, other than of course the Iceland stories.

He would undoubtedly get overexposed and overhyped at one of the red clubs. I’m not worried that will happen. He will still get that from time to time, especially on England duty. But he won’t get that constant week-in week-out scrutiny precisely because we aren’t a club that generates vast numbers of clicks.

The media with the biggest reach and biggest ability to “hype” is TV, with MOTD, Sky, Football Focus, MNF etc followed by radio with Radio 5 and Talksport. Sometimes just a few little montages on MOTD, or a single impressive performance like Sunday’s or a match winning one for England, are all it takes for a football “truism” to take root as the accepted truth amongst 80% of football supporters.

Foden elevated himself to “next Paul Gasgoine” territory amongst neutrals on Sunday and a few stunning goals or dribbles for the highlights over the next few months will cement it.

The irony for me, who watches him every week and has seen it coming, whilst he did some brilliant things on Sunday he wasn’t even our Man of The Match. For me is was Bernado! But he’s not English or 20.
