With all this gross and net spend obsession with Grealish, the press seem to have conveniently forgotten to add prize money to the pot.
The success from the last ten years has produced a decent boost to our spending power. Getting to the champs league final produced a decent amount alone. Winning the Prem also boosted us.
But as always, don't let facts get in the way of a good story...
Whether by bad faith or basic stupidity/incompetence, the issue of prize money is the biggest misunderstanding going when the media or uneducated rival fans talk about us being ‘backed by rich owners’.
We took in around £230m in prize money from the PL and Champions League last season alone. More than £2billion estimated since the 2008 takeover.
Not bad for a club bought for £200m or so.
The difference between City and our rivals being that our owners reinvest it all back into the club and don’t take it out.
I’ve suggested before that one of our more financially astute writers/podcasters could do a deep dive into the numbers over the years, it would be an interesting point to analyse.

Good read and clearly put. Huge problem with it though. There are some big words in a long article so the knuckle draggers will either not understand it, fall asleep trying to read it or won't bother because it's in a "funny newspaper"
Agreed, but I'll give it a go

Peps spend since he came to City is £993 million , a massive amount , however he's got around £300 million back in transfers out I believe , so that's £693 , he's then won the league 4 times , pre covid figures , for tv share out, prize money etc comes in around £150 million per league title x4 that's £600 million , so we're down to £93 million , £80 million for getting us to the champions league final , £10 million for each Caraboa cup or FA cup final , £10 million for every champions league quarter final , that's another £100 million , so just on prize money alone Peps made the club over £100 million profit over and above his net spend , now take into account the bottom line value of the club now compared to the day he took over , and my guess is the club's value as risen by quite a margin .. and imo Grealish is exactly the type of player who can take us to the next level , commercially , City's "Beckham" and will pay for himself many times over , in my opinion..

Also take away the spend that was on no first teamers.

We get youth prospects thrown in with the final tally while some others don't

You’re not ;) Standard media training/PR tactic. It also buys you some additional thinking time
I think the media still underestimate Pep's intelligence and his ability to articulate in a language that is not his native tongue. His knowledge of how our club is run goes way beyond the "I'm just a football coach" level in my opinion (but he is quite happy to use that excuse when he wants to) and his understanding of how the media probe and manipulate is obviously a product of his experiences in Barcelona and Munich. The way he dealt with Harris after the Brighton game was pure class, no hysterics but the disdain and contempt he showed him just by the look on his face the no doubt as to how he felt. He is also clearly a man who does not forget those who disrespect him, his players or his club .... I like him a lot!!
