I’ve had a look at the dates and while the redshirts have only finished in the top 2 three times in the last half a century, the last being 20 years ago, there were also a couple of very early outliers. So five times in total in the history of the English professional game.

That is the exact same as the number of times City and the odd lot from Trafford have made up the top 2. Five times, including last season.

City and the Cult have made up the top two on four occasions so far, so only one occasion less. And might yet end up doing so again this season.

Yet this game is supposedly the classic title rivalry for the ages?

Can’t be arsed checking but if you throw Arsenal and Chelsea into the mix then I’m sure they would approach similar numbers against the rags.

It is a media myth. Self serving hype and tripe.
 
Iv seen a lot of talk about the journalist whatsaap group on here. Does anyone uae any solid information on this??? Who created it? Whats discussed on it erc

Well , you write a fair bit of sense, normally.but did you really think a 3-2 loss could ever be anything other than a loss ?

Yep, spot on. So in the 132 years of the league title in its various guises, they have been the main protagonists in less than four per cent of seasons. A media myth
 
The DM are running an article on the 18 clubs voting for a month long ban on sponsorship by related parties. Can’t get anywhere near the comments section with anything realated to the dippers sponsorship, and that’s in an unmoderated forum.

That 5-1 defeat had a lot to answer for, over the years, or to put the same point slightly differently, it explains a lot once you understand the psychology and the personal history of a bully. It wasn't enough for them to give us a pasting, it wasn't enough to humiliate us the way he had been humiliated. His revenge was to marginalise us. That fucking banner didn't go up by accident.

This is not to say the Liverpool v United 'rivalry' has largely wholly manufactured by Ferguson or even by Sky, who have been perfectly happy to adopt Ferguson's narrative because it suits their purposes to have millions of plastics across Ireland, Scandinavia and the far east to be invested in a game that is, today, 3rd v 6th (which is not only what the table says, when you look at how Liverpool were against us and Chelsea, is about right in terms of quality, too. Maybe you'd have the rags in 7th or 8th given who they've played so far.) This was, and always has been, a big game, and for all that Sky blow smoke up this game's arse, the vitriol that will be on display is genuine.

But, as you say, there is a reason why your average match-going rag sings silly songs about us and not about them. There was a time under Keegan 20 years ago when our major rivals for the league were Wolves. We still sang songs about David Beckham. Singing their nursery rhymes is the way they keep themselves relevant, even though in reality they no longer are.

Dont know why people get wound up about United songs we are far nastier about them. Horrific songs about Munich and the morals of Beckham's wife, even questioning the paternity of his children. Hopefully this has died out now but we have a good response to the nursery rhyme " ocean finance on the phone ". It's bants live with it.

In my lifetime (b.1961) the United v Liverpool ' rivalry,' has 1st/ 2nd head to head league finishes as

I couldn't be arsed searching earlier , but four times in Sixty years !!!

Not sure what you mean ? I didn't know they had changed the format to a league. This was the first match against who ever so I assumed in the second leg at their ground they only needed to win 1-0 as they had the 2 away goals.
My point is, if it isnt City I ain't interested and in those days Europe was merely a holiday destination for me.
