I don't think Rag is. I've seen the term RagHead, which would tie in with headwear.

With regards to United, the term originates from when they almost went out of business and could barely put together kit for the team, and were having to play in old dishevelled kit. Hence the term Rags.

The term 'rag' was in fact coined by their own fans because of the tattered old kit they were reduced to wearing. City bought them a new kit in one of the many acts of kindness our club showed them over the years. And what did we get in return? The fucking clock banner.
