It is no part of the remit of the BBC to match salaries in the private sector. The argument that the most talented would desert the BBC is specious: (a) So what? (b) There are thousands of talented people who would be delighted to get a job at the BBC at far lower salaries than are paid now.
Why should the BBC pay less than "the going rate"?

The same reason the PM gets a pittance as a salary for running the country, as opposed to a big City firm.
So at what level does this start at-cleaner, catering assistant, production assistant? What your suggesting is a nonsense, my wife is an exec at the BBC if the salary wasn't commensurate to the industry she wouldn't be there.

Why should the BBC pay less than "the going rate"?
Because it is a free market and employers and employees are free to negotiate whatever they wish. The private sector set their wages to attract experienced broadcasters from itv and bbc. BBC, being publicly funded, should not enter that race.
There is no such thing as the going rate.

If their were talented people at the BBC they would not allow the offense to humanity that is Eastenders to be broadcast.

Of the 52 story links on the main BBC football page right now 19 Women's Stories 9 Manchester United, 1 City(talking about top six signings).... Interesting to see where the BBC sees football interest right now, while I think the coverage of the Women's Euros it totally over the top, its interesting that while that's on United are still getting nearly half as many stories as a tournament going on in the country right now...
