He wanted Chelsea and London. And the money they were offering. He also wanted Champions League football, something they couldn't offer with their position in the league table, and we could. Their winning the champions League changed that, as the winners qualified automatically.
This odd misconception that he chose them because of some idea of prestige has stuck since, and been broadbrushed everywhere.

funny you should mention that,it was brought up today at work by a workmate,think it will sink in and become more known ,imagine if the glazers sell for 5 billion,and the new guy has borrowed the money against united :)And he’s only worth 1.2 billion when the glazers are asking for 6. Fair enough. I'm just saying it was a unique circumstance that doesn't automatically apply to every CL win.
