I still think it will be only a matter of time before we start bidding such numbers for Benatia.
I get the feeling we don't want to show our hand too early because everyone knows we only have 50m to spend and therefore will want to exploit us, but at the end of the day 30-40m seems to be the price for in Vogue top central defenders nowadays.

It's not my money but the Mangala and Benatia fees quoted are ridiculous. I'd sooner try to get Jagielka or similar out of a PL team using Richards, Rodwell and / or Milner ( if he wants away) as part of the deal. With the UEFA restriction on spending maybe spending big on a CB will need to wait until next summer - but if we are going to spend big let's at least get someone who is the real deal rather than spending big on the likes of Mangala without really knowing if he can perform at the highest level. If we feel we must invest in a foreign defender then Ezequiel Garay has to be the best option out there - I.e. Good player and sensible price.

Totally agree mate I'm not saying Benatia is a bad player but to spend 25m+ on a defender who has been signed on a free twice worries me. I'd buy Jagielka tomorrow but he's a RCB? Gotta be better value for money somewhere. Although whatever happens in Sheikh Monsour I trust.

Jagielka? He would get destroyed in our high line.
John Stones looked better than him when he came into the Everton side towards the end of the season and whilst Stones looks a good prospect, even he is miles away from our level.
I agree Benatia is overpriced, Mangala most certainly is, but the prices for highly rated central defenders is now in that 30-40m barrier and striker have moved up to the 60-70m barrier, that's the market.
Garay would be my fallback options but he is off to Bayern.

Towards the end we did kind of jack in the 'high line' idea which is one of the reasons why MDM started to look ok given he was playing with the ball in front of him rather then chasing back having just been done like a kipper on the half way line.
