What you also need to understand is that the League is just on 10 years old. All the clubs have been created somewhat artificially. Prior to the A league we had the NSL which had clubs over 50 years old, problem was the clubs and the league was a rabble. Now the objection to the change in colours and name is mixed some are staunch and won't budge but most don't like it but understand they don't have much choice. This biggest issue has been how the buyout has been handled and delivered to the season ticket holders very poorly. We have been constantly told by posters that CFG will be the best thing ever, that they don't do things haphazardly and we should consider ourselves lucky they have come along. We are hopeful that this is true, until now 4 months we have been given very little evidence of this. Time will tell. I am hopeful.

Did they not produce a statement which said something along the lines of "Out of respect to the club and players in the middle of the season we will reserve wholesale changes and statements until at the conclusion of the season"?

So it's more like two or three weeks of inaction, not a third of a year.

Yes, that is almost word for word what they said. You'd presume a Heart fan would know that.

And it isn't inaction either, they've signed a bunch of players.

Again, this is one of those things that nobody will even remember in 2 years time and those not wanting change are on the wrong side of history.

Can we not pull out of the deal and then buy Sydney!

In fairness, we tried. Sydney said they didn't want to sell to us.

That said, I'm still hopeful that the best can be made of a messy situation in Melbourne.

Email to Melbourne City FC members

Dear Members,
Following a lengthy consultation with many of our members, partners and other stakeholders, I am writing to share with you of a number of changes being announced today in relation to the identity of our Club.
Most notably, I can confirm that a decision has been made to change the name of the Club to Melbourne City Football Club. We have created a new badge that is inspired by the heritage of Melbourne that also ensures the Club’s foundation colours of red and white remain at the heart of its identity.
The Home Kit combines the white from the Club’s original kits with the signature blue of its sister clubs in Manchester and New York. The Away Kit celebrates the Club’s history with its red and white stripes. Both will be available for order in advance of the upcoming season.I am delighted to confirm the appointment of Nike as the official on-field kit supplier to Melbourne City FC and to reveal the two kit designs our players will be wearing in the Hyundai A-League 2014-15 season. The partnership with Nike is an exciting development that will ensure Melbourne City FC will be competing in kit and equipment of the highest quality.
I want to acknowledge and thank you for the clear and respectful way in which so many of you have shared your views with us in recent months. Specifically, I would like to thank those that responded to our members’ survey, those that contacted us by phone and in writing, and those that have shared their opinions in other ways.None of these decisions has been taken lightly. We believe the changes announced today will strengthen the Club’s ties with the community to which it belongs while expanding its ability to grow commercially and harness the many benefits of belonging to the City family. We also believe they strike an ideal balance between celebrating the Club’s existing traditions and realising the opportunities available to it in the future
We are optimistic about the upcoming season. Since his reappointment in March 2014, Head Coach John van’t Schip has been working closely with colleagues in Melbourne, Manchester and New York to assemble a balanced and competitive squad for Melbourne City FC. I am thrilled to announce that New York City FC striker and Spanish World Cup player David Villa will play, train and contribute to Melbourne City FC’s campaign in the Hyundai A-League 2014-15 season prior to making his debut for New York City FC in the MLS.
I hope that each of you will choose to be a part of this exciting new era for football in Melbourne.Memberships for Melbourne City FC are now available from membership.melbournecityfc.com.au.
Yours sincerely,
Ferran Soriano

Re: Melbourne Heart FC Thread

DAVID Villa is coming to the A-League.

Spain’s all-time leading goalscorer will play 10 games during a guest stint for the club that is now officially known as Melbourne City in an incredible coup for Australian football.

Melbourne City, formerly known as Melbourne Heart, announced its much-anticipated name change on Thursday morning.

And the Manchester City-owned club has made its first huge splash in the market by luring Villa to town on loan from sister club New York City FC.

OTHER BIG NAMES WHO CAME TO PLAYNEW OUTFIT: MELBOURNE CITY REBORN WITH NEW LOOKNew York, which will make its Major League Soccer debut next season, announced Villa, 32, as its inaugural signing this week.

But with the 2015 American season not commencing until March, Villa will come to Melbourne in order to maintain match fitness, as was speculated by the Herald Sun on Saturday.

He is likely to be available from the October kick-off of the 2014-15 A-League season and will have played his quota of games by the time the competition goes into recess for January’s Asian Cup, to be hosted by Australia.

A-League clubs are permitted to sign one guest player per season for a maximum of 10 games.

The player, who must be of high promotional value to the league, will have his wages paid outside the $2.55 million salary cap.

Villa’s acquisition does not preclude City from signing an international marquee player.

Although his stay will be brief, the Spaniard’s signing will surely go down as the biggest in the 10-year history of the A-League, arguably eclipsing that of Italian megastar Alessandro Del Piero.

The striker has scored 56 goals in 94 games for Spain, including five in his country’s 2010 World Cup-winning campaign, and may line up for the Spaniards against the Socceroos in Brazil on June 24.

Villa scored 15 goals in 47 games for La Liga winners Atletico Madrid in 2013-14, playing in the European Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in his first season since moving from Barcelona.

While playing for the Catalan club, he scored in the 3-1 Champions League final win over Manchester United in 2011, won two La Liga titles and a Club World Cup.

Heart, in its former guise, was formed in 2009 and has taken part in four A-League campaigns, making the finals for the first and only time in 2011-12.

The City Group announced its takeover of the club on January 23 for a fee of about $11 million.

It has long been speculated the club would change its name in time for the new season.

The club’s new home kit will encompass red and black stripes and will look strikingly similar to the away kit worn by its parent club, the English Premier League champions.

Melbourne City will play its first game as a newly named club in the first-ever FFA Cup, a knockout competition based on England’s FA Cup, in early August.

Villa will not be available to play in that game as he will go on holidays after his international commitments with Spain conclude after the World Cup.

Re: Melbourne Heart FC Thread

Very pleased and surprised at the outcome. I will retract all my doubts, and probably over anxious worries. I haven't really got an EPL team but today and onwards will be getting into city. Massive news in Melbourne and this rebranding from I can tell has even won over a big proportion of the negative heart supporters. By the end of today I think more than 100 have renewed or signed on for next season memberships. Which for a fan base of 8000 or so and the season doesn't start until Octoberish is huge. Villa signing for a loan also helped massively and talk of Lampard also coming will send things crazy. So all ends up I was wrong you blokes new the score, and I'm just rapped its actually happening!!!!!!

Melbourne City FC

As advised sometime ago to all bluemooners Melbourne City or MCFC as it will be known here in oz becomes official now with the change in home colours ala City keeping a version of the current colours for away games as previously advised.

Good that Villa will play 10 games next season for the club as will Lampard if we can get him to New York.
