I would think it would be mid to late 70s, we were living in Shropshire & a couple of mates had tagged along with me & my dad, glorious sunny weather all the way until we got to manchester, we walked to the ground at around 1.30 & people were walking away saying it had been called off, so we went off to the sports depo up the road & as I remember come 3oclock the sun was shining but the game was still off,We’ve had many games postponed ( called off before they start )
Abandoned means it started but didn’t finish. Did your fog game actually start? I’m interested in what game it was either way because I don’t recall it.
Think he means when it was rebuilt not the originalThe Kippax not having a roof and Nicky Summerbee playing couldn't have happened surely? Or perhaps my memory has gone?
I was at that, we walked across from The Parkside pub, and the road was about 1 foot deep in water, amazed it started at all as the pitch was similar when we got inside, though the rain eased, it was farcical. Pretty sure the kippax had it's roof by then though.Just checked the other Ipswich game that was called off. Worthington Cup (League Cup) Quarter Final in 2000, 1:1 at the time.
Looking at the photos it looks a little 'damp.
That's the one! Thank you, yes confusion reigned thereThis was possibly it ?
It was a dire evening game when it was raining / sleeting. Mark Robins scored the only goal after a back pass got stuck in a puddle ?
That was a long journey home, that night…although was it Cantona’s Hong Kong Phooey night too ?

That game should never have started. The pitch was waterlogged and the rain was so heavy that fans in the first dozen rows of the North Stand all scuttled off to stand at the back. As I recall Ipswich went ahead by a goal caused by the atrocious conditions with the ball sticking in the puddles and catching City's defence out. Can't remember who the ref was but as soon as City equalised he abandoned the game. It looked to me like he knew he fecked up big time by not postponing it in the first place.
There was no roof on the new kippax for that Leicester game, I remember getting soaked to the bone in that one.The old Kippax was still fully in place for the ipswich game, and Summerbee was playing for Swindon still.
Ive got a vague memory of it pissing down against Leicester and getting beat, would of been early 95?
Think he means the new Kippax. The Kippax not having a roof and Nicky Summerbee playing couldn't have happened surely? Or perhaps my memory has gone?
Tony Coleman was all for playing on, while stood in an inch of water.Did a little bit of research for you mate, the roof was put on the Kippax in 1956 the nearest game I can find abandoned because of a waterlogged pitch was Newcastle in 1969 finished 1:1 with Bobby Owen scoring just before half time the crowd was over 60000.
Really hope this helps Blue.
Lol, I meant both happening in the same time frame both apparently it was my memory. The season after the Kippax terrace came down, was there not temporary uncovered seating there for at least some of that season?
'Nicky Sumerbee playing couldn't have happened', does make sense though, as though he was on the pitch he often didn't really play did he! (frustrating wasn't he!)
Actually think we had 2 matches called off at Maine Road during 'my time', both bizarrely against Ipswich I believe.
Here is the goal......Sounds like Leicester in 94/95. The pitch was no more playable than the Ipswich game a year earlier. We were shite.
I think this was the game where a Vicar was called on the public address to return to his Church because it was flooded.
