Just checked the other Ipswich game that was called off. Worthington Cup (League Cup) Quarter Final in 2000, 1:1 at the time.
Looking at the photos it looks a little 'damp.

This was the game I was thinking of. Had a feeling it was a cup game. Knew it was early 00s cos I remember swp being on the bench

That game should never have started. The pitch was waterlogged and the rain was so heavy that fans in the first dozen rows of the North Stand all scuttled off to stand at the back. As I recall Ipswich went ahead by a goal caused by the atrocious conditions with the ball sticking in the puddles and catching City's defence out. Can't remember who the ref was but as soon as City equalised he abandoned the game. It looked to me like he knew he fecked up big time by not postponing it in the first place.

Pretty sure it was Dickov who scored it who looked pissed off as he thought the ref was chalking it off rather than cancelling the game.

The old Kippax was still fully in place for the ipswich game, and Summerbee was playing for Swindon still.

Ive got a vague memory of it pissing down against Leicester and getting beat, would of been early 95?

There was no roof on the new kippax for that Leicester game, I remember getting soaked to the bone in that one.

Did a little bit of research for you mate, the roof was put on the Kippax in 1956 the nearest game I can find abandoned because of a waterlogged pitch was Newcastle in 1969 finished 1:1 with Bobby Owen scoring just before half time the crowd was over 60000.

The season after the Kippax terrace came down, was there not temporary uncovered seating there for at least some of that season?
'Nicky Sumerbee playing couldn't have happened', does make sense though, as though he was on the pitch he often didn't really play did he! (frustrating wasn't he!)
Actually think we had 2 matches called off at Maine Road during 'my time', both bizarrely against Ipswich I believe.

Lol, I meant both happening in the same time frame both apparently it was my memory.

This thread reminds me of Wigan away in the 3rd division at Springfield Park.
Pissing it down all day and the game should never have started. How it ended was a mystery.
Rumour was the police put a little pressure on the ref as they didn't want to deal with thousands of Blues in all the local boozers for the rest of the day.

Sounds like Leicester in 94/95. The pitch was no more playable than the Ipswich game a year earlier. We were shite.

I think this was the game where a Vicar was called on the public address to return to his Church because it was flooded.

United battered us at Maine Road 3-0 in 95 and I was sat in Kippax which had no roof on and it hammered down all day, if my memory serves me the game was in doubt in the morning.
