When Forest Green Rovers played Cheltenham Town last year there were probably 100 "Stroudy Rowdy" ultras dressed head to toe in black. Most looked about 14 years old. iirc their team lost 3-1 and dropped into Divison 2 shortly afterwards.
Still they did frighten a couple of elderly ladies going into Iceland.

I remember Tony O'Neil saying they started to wear all black as they'd go straight to the pubs and clubs in Manchester when they got back from an away game. Dressing smart meant they didn't have to go home and change.

I remember a big mob of Utd went to Upton Park probably late 80’s
head to toe in Black.
Balaclavas also iirc.

May have been two separate occasions them, the night they all donned the balaclavas was when they tried that Plaistow maneuver again, which had gone a tad tits up on a previous visit.

I think the all-black palaver was a more organised affair against the same foe but somewhere around Whitechapel in the 89/90 or 91 season before catching on n becoming the norm amongst them to follow.

That was more or less the uniform when I worked on the building sites in the late 70s early 80s,
Wooly / Beanie hat, Black donkey jacket, Jeans & either Dealer Boots or Doc Martins, non of this colourful hi viz stuff or helmets, gloves, safety glasses, ear defenders etc etc :-)
