Message from a Sunderland fan

Not too much to add but like many will always remember their fans in 91 and the noise they made, for a corner, just after they equalised.

Roll on to 2014, and the cup final, and they were class again. Proper football people, with a love for their hometown club.

Really hope they get promoted as the fans, more than any other, deserve it.

I well remember going to roker new years eve 1966. We lost 1 0 to a late Bobby Kerr goal. Some pillock pulled the chain on the return train to Newcastle for our connection to Manchester. Back in town after the last train to Bury, my dad picked me up near crumpsall on on my walk back to Bury. I was one of a very few blues from Bury in those days. Met many Sunderland fans after the 2014 final - simply wonderful people.
I was at the match in 1966. What a miserable place Sunderland was then. I haven’t been back since so I can’t comment further. It was New Years Even and a Saturday night and the pubs shut at 10:30. We got attacked by Neanderthals on the way out if the pub.

Meantime most of my friends got the hell out if Sunderland and stopped in Pontefract on the way home where the pubs were open till 12:15. They had such a great time that a group of us went to Pontefract the following new year.

Since then I have to say that I have always got on with Sunderland fans, particularly after the 2014 League Cup final. My daughter now works in Sunderland for Gentoo Housing Association but lives in Whitley Bay.

Watching City the other night is like watching a different sport to my lot at Sunderland. I hope the long term Maine Road lot are lapping it up.
Alright Fella

Yes , I am.

I wish your club well, always had a soft spot for Sunderland since I saw them play Cardiff at Maine Road in an FA Cup replay in the early 70s. I think it was during the time there was power cuts as the game was on a midweek afternoon and my grandad took me because it was football. It may even have been the year you won the Cup and beat Leeds. I am not sure being an old fucker now and losing my marbles in general.

I hope Sunderland can get the rub of the green in the play offs and these new owners are the ones Sunderland fans deserve, getting their great club back to the Premier League as a force. I will never forget their sportsmanship in 2014 or their support on so many occasions, most notably 1991.

Like many, I have a soft spot for Sunderland.

Started in '73 at Maine Road. 11 at the time so didn't have a clue about Sunderland. My Dad said we would have no problem beating them as they were near the bottom of Div 2.
Sat near the front of the North Stand next to the Kippax. Don't remember much of the game but the atmosphere was electric. I remember it kicking off a few times in in the Kippax and behind us in the seats.
Was at our Static caravan in Towyn for the final. I'd drawn their club crest and put it the window. My Day was worried that we might get a brick through the window from some dirty Leeds fan!

Felt for a coach load that had come down for a mid week game and had a number of windows put through (81? I think)

1991 - what a day that was. One of the best days I had at Maine Road.

1996 friendlies at Exeter and Plymouth. Stayed in Torquay for those games. Bumped in to a Mackem, Ian, in a pub one lunch time. Got chatting etc and had a great laugh. Fucking hell, he hated the Geordies. Came along for the Exeter friendly. His girlfriend was wearing a Celtic shirt. That didn't go down too well the the South west branch who were all Rangers nuts! we exchanged numbers and kept in touch.

1997 tour of Scotland. Lucky for me, Ian was living in Kirkaldy and he kindly put us for the week. Met up a few more of his mates, all good lads too, they came along to the Livingston game. They kept asking me why City fans were singing about the Sash (Rangers)!

Met them again for the first game at the SoL. Went in to a Vaux pub just across from the stadium and all the fans were brilliant with us. The return at Maine Road was the last time I saw Ian and his mates. We both chose different paths sadly, but great memories I've kept.

My favourite second club and fans. Will be rooting for them in the Play-offs and hope they get back to the premier league soon.

I’ve watched Sunderland til I Die and so much of it resonates of what it was like supporting City in the 90s and 00s. Good luck in the play offs
